The Secret Planet. No human had ever landed on the hidden planet of Arisia. A mysterious space barrier turned back both men and ships. Samms knew the price of that power would be high. But even he had no idea of the ultimate cost, and the weird destiny waiting for the First Lensman.

My Gawd! I read all e.e. Smith's books back in 1964, when I was 12. I still remember what a zwilnik is, and a zebrisken fontima too.
Oh joy!

Not bad for a book written in 1950 !
I had the complete Lensmen series in paperback back in the late 70's as well as the Skylark series which first book was first written in 1921. Apart from some of the first person phrases such as "swell" "lug" which seem to be fashionable in the 1940's and 50's when most of the books were written/published, this series could have been written in recent times. Modern books usually will have some descriptive violence with the odd swear word here and there but here everything is left to the imagination (as it should)
At over 11 hours long this book will last about 2 weeks as i listen as i drive to and from work

Oooh. When I see a length of 11hrs, that grabs my attention. I know length isn't everything😱. If it's not good after a couple hrs I usually move on to another story. But I just always feel let down when I really enjoy a story and suddenly it's over. so sometimes I LOVE these longer stories. Even better if it's a series.

This was one of the first si fi series I read and they still read well and I really like the audiobooks.

*The* classic Space Opera, that invented the trope of technological evolution without bound to ridiculous levels. It even sent up the worst of badly written pulp Sci Fi in one book. It has survived by being sui generis, and being really well written, quasi solid rods, cones, planes and helices of inconceivable power notwithstanding.
This one was written to retcon some continuity errors between #1 and #3, yet it stands on its own.

This narrator's voice pops the mic to excruciating degree with his hard consonants and "s" sounds. It makes my head hurt and I feel like screaming.
