During my 6 years of eating a vegan diet I suffered from deep dark depression that got worse and worse.

I was diagnosed with major depression and C-PTSD. The carnivore diet (specifically ribeye and minced beef) has changed my life. Depression is now a distant memory. I never thought it would happen, but here we are.

As a psychiatrist I'll be directing people to this video! Please make more about mental health - the people need it! 💖

I didn't do the carnivore diet for depression, I did it for gut health and honestly I didn't expect it to be much different. Didn't take long but one of the first things I noticed about carnivore was that my lifelong depression and anxiety just disappeared. Even now it feels weird to wake up and not have the urge to off myself. Not constantly fantisizing about plotting my own death is absolutely my favorite part of this way of eating. It's a stark difference in your default mood.
Standard American + Junk Food = Negative Mood
Carnivore = Positive Mood
Even if I have the smallest amount of seed-oil from restaurant food, the anxiety immediately comes back so I have to be very strict. Rather than throwing my life away I genuinely am grateful to be here and it's all because of you, Shawn. Thank you for giving me an alternative to the depressing and hopeless life I used to have. I have become a better person because of you and even family/friends/coworkers have noticed something different. If meat, salt+water is what I have to do to maintain the peace of mind I now have, its worth sacrificing all the shit that I used to eat. Not like I didn't have enough of that crap anyways :D

I had depression and perpetual exhaustion for about 3 years. I came across some interview you did and thought carnivore might help with my low energy. Within 2 weeks my depression was pretty much gone, my mental clarity was sharp, I had gotten my gym membership back and have less soreness between workouts. I'm probably 90% carnivore and I feel great.

Since going carnivore, my mood is much better, and I can work through emotions far more easily, and I just have a greater overall optimism.

Depression is often a sign that you need to start looking after your body and stop with the junk food and the poor sleeping patterns and start working out. It's not an illness that you're stuck with and no medication is really going to help, it's called being malnourished.

This week: run 10 miles then eat 4 pounds of ribeye. My mind is clear, I have peace and joy. Stuff just doesn’t bother me.

I greatly appreciate you Dr Baker! Thank you. I believe you are putting resources into improving video quality. I think adding background music is a mistake. I find it annoying and distracting - not enough to stop listening, but why put in effort to add something that actually distracts from your message. Just my two cents (that you didn’t ask for!)
Thank you!

Feel sorry for elderly being fed virtually meatless institutional food.

I got a depression (diagnosed) back around 20 years ago . Leading up to that, I still had some meat in my diet, but ate as much salat, fruit and vegetables etc as I could, because that’s what I was told was the healthy thing to do . I also got increasingly bad joint and back pain in that period. I ended up self medicating with cannabis and wine on top of the anti depressants, none of it helped apart from the numbing effect. Today I “self medicate” with meat, eggs and long walks, much much better !

For decades, we've been told to cut back on meat and fat. Especially red meat and animal fats.

For decades, mental health problems and depression has been increasing.

Gee. Ya think there's a connection? ;-)

Also, a thank you to your editor for reducing the bouncy text. Much easier on the eyes!

Dr Christopher Palmer, PhD professor of psychiatry from Harvard just published a book on this very subject.... Brain Energy. Highly recommend the read... he has cured the incurable! Schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, obesity, PTSD, ADHA, OCD, to name a few... all with a keto/carnivore diet....

I miss those really good unscripted, stream of consciousness type videos where he'd talk about current issues.

This really shouldn't be surprising. Humans feel better and think better when they eat a species appropriate diet, i.e. meat. Plants and particularly grains are, IMO, a subsistence food for humans, at best. For more info about how diet can impact mental health I suggest you search for youtube videos with Dr. Christopher Palmer, (including an interview by Dr. Baker).

I don't think it's only about nutrition.

I think adequate nutrition is necessary, but I also believe actual activity and productivity matter, in addition to sunlight and fresh air. The latter two seem to be directly associated with seasonal affective disorder. Living in a climate that's usually sunny helps. I get shirtless walks in the sun during the winter when the weather allows. Fortunately that does happen in Colorado. There are other climates I would not live in.

PS: Quite bluntly, I think nothing's as good for the soul as productive, hard work on a sunny day. Having some good food breaks and camaraderie can no-doubt help.
