How to Plant Garlic in Containers

Who plants garlic in Fall and who plants garlic in Spring? Well, it depends on where you live. What kind of garlic do you plant? Well, it depends on where you live. Can you grow garlic in containers?? YES!!
I'll break it all down to a simple formula in this video. Plus because garlic takes a while to produce, and in the meantime takes up valuable garden real estate, you can interplant to save space in a small space garden.

Yes, I grow in 6b and you need to get them in before it freezes but I don't believe growing in a container would work in the north unless it is somehow protected because the cloves should still not freeze solid. Which you run that risk due to the container not being protected by surrounding soil or some sort of insulation.

Growing garlic is a ton of fun. Planting it in the north is always exciting trying to get your timing right!! I'm in zone 5 my garlic has been in the ground for about a month already give or take a week. If you miss your window in the fall you can plant in the spring, just get the cloves in the ground just as soon as you can work the soil, don't worry if you get a frost after you have planted and your crop will most likely be a bit later then one planted in the fall. I have tried planting in containers with mixed results. The bulbs closer to the edges of the container seem to freeze completely and die. Oddly, I don't have that problem in my raised beds, go figure. Here in the north we can only plant hardneck varieties and yes you are correct we get wonderful scapes from them. I was unaware that softneck garlic didn't get scapes. I have a fantastic recipe for garlic mashed potato soup that I use the scapes for. You can use them in any recipe that calls for garlic, just use a bit more as the taste is not as strong as garlic cloves. Hope this helps some gardening here in the north!! Happy planting.

I am a cilantro lover. Love the smell as much as the taste. To me it smells citrusy and I can’t get enough of it. It goes wonderfully on just about everything from salads, sandwiches, soups, wraps…I could go on and on!

So happy & appreciate that you talk about the type soil & fertilizer needed. So many others fail to do this. You're my fav gardener!
And I love EVERYTHING you planted in that container, & gonna do it too.

Love cilantro in Asian and Mexican cuisine! It was an acquired taste for me since I didn't grow up with it but I do like cilantro. I used the seeds before the greens though.

Yes, zone 3B/4A here northern Ontario Canada. Garlic went in around Halloween! We've had a warmer fall this year than usual but around the end of October is the norm 😊

Hi Brian!.. have been away for a long time, but back into gardening again now. The cilantro thing is, as far as Im concerned.. something you must learn to like, , or.. accuire a taste for ! .. once you do, you quite enjoy it! .. that has been my personal experience anyway, as. A child in northern Canada, we never even knew of cilantro! Our mothers didn’t cook the foods that its called for, so until we first ventured down to Mexico as adults 👵🏻 we had never tasted or heard of the plant, but, now we love it in our salsas and I cook often with it as I now enjoy the flavour a lot thanks for this garlic video .. you are the best! Im gardening in containers only, ..in northern Alberta.. on my 4th floor deck, but .. I must be able to grow something in order for my soul to be”nourished” 😝 BEST..CHERYL🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

I love both! So different in flavors and use in dishes. I am glad my daughters love pesto and also love to cook. I think I will do this type of container this year.

I grow tomatoes in large pots with basil underneath, so this will make for some fun harvesting and cooking!

I really need to get myself comfortable with how to do the drip systems.

If you are having issues with the wind striking your microphone which records as a dull roaring noise, there is a simple solution. It is called a "dead cat" or "wind breaker". Basically, it is a fuzzy covering for microphones. I get mine for a few dollars from various eBay sellers.

The way these work is the air currents are broken up into micro-currents that are not recorded. The sound of your voice is not affected by the fuzzy covering. The end result is a clear recording in windy conditions.

Yes! Both my husband & I are "soap" cilantro-ers"! Always just put parsley instead in recipes.

I just made a small garden bed for garlic. I'm trying hard neck and soft neck. I love cilantro so I'm glad to see I can plant it on top of my garlic
