Why don't they build their Hyperloop out of gold? Would solve the rust issue.

The funniest thing was when they tested the pod, reached 60mph and they released it, only for it to stop by itself on vaccum faster than my civic on rubber tires on air...

I disagree: Having these hyperloop pods running on wheels is a good idea.
Can I suggest some other improvements:
Put a pair of metal rods on the floor of the tunnel, spaced maybe 143.5cm apart, and have these wheels running over those rods. That will reduce rolling resistance.
String a wire from the roof of the tunnel and use that as the power supply for the pod.
Scrap the idea of having the tube in a vacuum. The cost/energy of maintaining the vacuum will be more than the cost/energy of overcoming air resistance.
Join a load of these pods together with some sort of hinge-type connector so that the front pod can pull the other pods behind it.
Outside of urban areas, don't bother with the tube, just run it in the open air.

This reminds me of when I was in engineering school, working on my senior design project.
They had us re-designing a linkage assembly used to reset circuit breakers for power stations. GE had a design that they were having issues with. They gave us the requirements for the input, and output to the linkage, and asked us to redesign it within the space available. The first thing that we noticed, was that they were using a 0.7 hp motor as their input, but when we did the calculation for the output, it came out to 2.1 hp. When we pointed this out to our faculty adviser, he suggested that we try using a nutating gear assembly to get the extra power. We spent over an hour walking him through the physics to explain why that would not work.

In the end, we were the only team that did not build any hardware. Instead, we provided them a design that would meet their requirements, if they had a 2.1 hp motor. We also provided a presentation on just why their current design was not capable of doing what they claimed that it did. We got an A.

Engineering schools waste students energy on loads of pointless projects. My third year project was to evaluate a company's"green" proposal and we came to the conclusion it was pointless and uneconomical. The next year it became a groups fourth year project since the company had a goverment grant to waste. For the instructors it was better that the challenge had funding than a point.

In all fairness, the engineering students don't really care if what they are doing is practical or whether it can ever be achieved successfully. Its really just a lab project for them to get practical engineering experience as part of their education. They shouldn't be concerned with commercial viability, that's Elon's insurmountable problem.

Air levitation in a vacuum is such a galaxy brain concept that merely thinking about it reduced my cognitive abilities significatively

This is a great project to teach engineering students how to deal with crazy, and impossible design requirements from people with more imagination than intelligence.

0:39 What if a battery lasted forever.
1:00 Unlimited charges.
1:15 Hundreds of thousands of charges.
3:04 (text) 5, 000 to 6, 000 charging cycles.
Umm, someone needs to make up their mind exactly how long this battery lasts and how many charge cycles it can endure.

I also love the fact that they went to using wheels on a track, without implementing any of the great parts of rail.

Unfair to say college studenrs haven't questioned if the hyperloop is viable, they probably have. They still have to build something for a engineering project. Only the university PR dept should be ashamed of over selling it, not the students.

Quantitative Chemistry I & II were the most disheartening, wake-up call of my undergraduate experience; all my starry-eyed optimism for future energy storage revolutions turned salty like evaporated tears in the desert.

When I was in electrical engineering college in the 90’s, the big national competition with teams from multiple universities was the solar powered car, I believe sponsored by the Department of Energy. I remember arguing with one of the contributors at our college that this was a complete waste of time, that they weren’t solving an actual problem. Better solar panels is one thing, electric cars is another, but there was never going to be a solar powered car. All it was was an exercise on low weight design, finding a lightweight student to drive it, and optimizing some charging cycles, nothing like an actual car.

The scariest thing is, those engineering students are probably going to get an MBA and jump right into management at engineering companies.

EDIT: Or they *really* drink the Kool-Aid and work at SpaceX.

Let's face it, Elon Musk's most impressive achievement is avoiding being taken to court.

She has invented the supercap. All other companies that invented supercaps that aren't made of gold must feel rather lost right now.

And the amazing thing - her supercap can handle hundreds of thousands of cycles. Something that must feel scary for the competitors that can handle millions of cycles...

Watching this video is a trip down memory lane of all the sensationalized breakthrough technologies that for one reason or another went bust and were all but forgotten in a remarkably short period of time.

You don't understand, when you combine these two extraordinary breakthroughs, you'll have a hyperloop that will never rust because it will be made in pure gold.

Is it just coincidence that everything in Muskworld operates to the power of 10?
10X faster
10X safer
10X cheaper
10X more powerful
Could this also explain why none of his plans ever meet their scheduled dates? 1 Muskyear = 10 earthyears?
