I like Dr. Matthew and I see what he is saying here, but I am split on this one to be honest. I see the point Matthew is making here but at the same time I see the point the other guys making. He is essentially saying that there are things to eat for polyphenols olive oil due to the calorie density. But this is an issue for some people because some people are very tiny and therefore have to eat a very small amount of calories in order to maintain their body weight. For example, a very small woman who is 5 foot tall may only need about 1200 cal to lose weight. So after she gets enough protein, trying to leave enough room for some carbs for and some energy to work out, she is not left with very many calories at all in her calories budget and realistically she may not have room to fit in a tablespoon of olive oil or two what room she has left for she needs to prioritize more satiating foods because she is already feeling hungry on her calorie deficit.

So people like her will have to use calorie free, cooking spray or water to cook their vegetables in because they don’t have much room for their diet.

Now that does not mean that olive oil is unhealthy. It clearly is healthy promoting. But not everyone has the room to fit a tablespoon or two of oil into their diet like that if they are cutting calories depending how many calories they need to lose weight. Someone like me you can lose weight on a higher amount of calories can fit tablespoon or two of all oil into my diet. But not everyone can.

Of course you don’t sauté in plums. The point is, you can sauté in water and use that calorie budget for plums. You wouldn’t compare the polyphenols in EVOO to the 0 polyphenols in water, you’d compare it to the food that replaces those calories. It’s actually your logic that is flawed here.

22 year vegan and I think a lot of these no oil advocates, like the late Dr McDougall, do not understand satiety and how some people really struggle with it and food noise. I avoided cooking with oil for years and did not lose weight. Now that I’m adding back in EVO for roasting and blooming herbs and spices, I noticed I feel more satiated, need less food to feel satisfied and am losing weight. And you don’t need much.

Dr Davis obviously understands the overweight population and what works best to keep them on a healthy diet.

Also EVOO may have other beneficial compounds apart from the polyphenols. As you say, the outcome data is a much better metric

I think Chip Esselstien has a decent point, but the human outcome data should not be ignored or traded for fat-fobia.
That said, I am a bigger fan of canola oil because of its price and similar health out comes to olive oil. And of course, no one is obligated to eat any oil if they don't like them. Just do not spread nonsense about them.

I'd like to see more stuff on added oils vs. low fat. This is my biggest confusion. I currently don't use oils, but I don't avoid nor seek out fatty foods because I don't know which is healthier. I don't miss fat, but I don't know if I should.

Originally, oil was considered very bad for someone with heart disease. Is this still valid? I consume a small amount (usually) canola, and don't really worry about it one way or the other.
