We don't know the consequences of spoiling our kids.

Giving them more, offering them everything, is equivalent to overprotecting and under-challenging them.

So, be thoughtful with your children!

This has actually become a personal revelation of mine over the past three years. I’ve missed certain financial opportunities in my life due to a multitude of reasons and when I’ve looked at the individuals that capitalized on said ventures, I’ve noticed a trend towards self-destruction. I voiced a multitude of prayers over the past year especially, thanking our Father for His prudence and guidance. I’ve truly enjoyed all of your insight and perspective over the past year or two, since discovering your lectures, Jordan. I wish you and yours long lives full of contentment, joy, and the strength to persevere.

Spot on. Kids that don't HAVE to typically never learn how to.

This is why larger families (3/4 or more) are actually a benefit to society. Perhaps it’s time to commend parents who generously have a larger family.

The point about having more material assets for your children is not that children have easier lives but that their lives are made more
COMFORTABLE!
This can lead to a lack of striving …
Mostly young people need to extend themselves to find work to live and have to basic needs of their lives met when they leave home.

Having to suffer discomfort is a good part of life- it piques our creativity.

Thank you Jordan for sharing your wisdom. 🙏

Dr. Peterson I wish to God that your advice had reached me when I was a young man in the mid 70's. Pollution and overpopulation were real issues for my generation and I decided that for the good of the planet that I would not have many children, or perhaps none at all. How wrong was I to feel that way. It didn't help that none of my 7 serious relationships worked out until I met a wonderful woman at age 38 and she was 35 with 3 kids of her own. I tried my best to be a good step-father to them and for the most part that worked out well, but my wife lost the ability to have any more kids. Even though I put on a brave face something deep inside me broke down and started to weep with sorrow over the loss to have MY child. That sorrow never stops, never goes away, it just sits deep inside me growing worse as I get older. You emphasize to people that you don't want to do things that make you bitter and resentful and believe me that not having my child to carry on my name is by far the greatest regret. Don't get me wrong my step children are great and they bring happiness into my life, but it just isn't the same thing. Having a spouse that you love deeply and bringing new life into your lives is just a whole different way to find joy and fulfillment. You speak very wise words Dr. Peterson, I hope more people listen to you.

Every time I listen to this man I am stunned by his raw honesty and his incredibly insight. His emotional responses to what he's discussing convict me of what he's saying on a level I cannot express. This man is a gift to us all.

The old way of thinking about children created our history. Children are entrusted to us, to guide and accompany them through much of their life journey. They come here helpless, terrified, uncomfortable and alone and utterly dependent on our grace and compassion.

Peterson beautifully explains the true nature of man, and his crusade to bring humans close to the natural order of things is truly remarkable.

I finally agree with Peterson on something -- financial prosperity can have deleterious effects on those that have it and on their children. It takes discipline and good judgement to constructively manage wealth. I also agree on over-protected and scheduled children. We have seen that in our children's parenting styles. They did not get that style from us, so the source of it must be in their generations' culture.

Not everyone is suitable to be a parent, they are just not psychologically equipped. We have six children and we are equipped for parenthood; we love it. But, it definitely is not for everyone. You can have a fulfilling life of meaning and purpose without having children.

Very Beautifully said. Children have to be taught values and moral. They have to learn to respect themselves and if they get everything how can they learn that. I find that very true what Peterson states : "Children give us so much joy and love." I believe by teaching deep true values and moral to our children we give them the foundation for everything else and an ancor for bad times or when we are no longer there to guide them. I believe that the issue with society today is that academic values are priororatized to moral and values. Life is so short and people wake up late or never at all.

I see an interesting inversion of what he says in my family. My dad and step -mom- moron are high-level narcissists (Also life long actors in the public school systems too, go figure) and due to that as they are reaching retirement age they are bleeding out family and social connections at an unsustainable rate now due to all the lifelong lies and manipulations they have done catching up with them.

When you build a family on the rule of, "Doing my way or GTFO." as your kids get older and more resourced, despite your attempts to hold them down, at some point they will reach a self-sustaining point where they can GTFO when you try to leverage your resources against them one time too many.

Yes, it is good when kid or kids learn the lessons the hard way, lot of parents doing mistakes when they can not say "No!" to the kid/kids. Parent/parents must be the authoriry/authorities, not the kid/kids. Kids will always ask for something. If it is a question so give them an honest answer if it is possible, if not just say that they are too young to know the truth (do not lie or mislead!!!), but if it is a toy, they must deserve it. Try to involve kid/kids into daily chores and reward them.
