How to: Jump Start an EV!

You already know how to jumpstart a regular car, but are you sure you know how to jumpstart an electric vehicle? It's basically the same but there are some differences you should know! Check out the video above to learn more.

Thanks a bunch for this. I just had my main (larger) battery replaced so the 12V must be the issue. Would I have to use another car to jumpstart my 12V battery or can I use a jumper box purchased from an auto store?

I was wondering about this for my Mercedes ( I've never need to jump it but some things are good to know just in case ), so there is no positive and negative under the hood just a positive under a sliding plastic door so I'm suppose to connect the negative to a metal bolt on the car so im gonna go look for one so if I ever need to do this and I don't have service I can still do it with my battery jumper I keep in my trunk. I'm also wondering if its worth it to remove both floors in my trunk to get to the actual 12 volt battery if so how because only one terminal is exposed and to get to the other I have to remove the battery. ( why could they not just put the batter under the trunk floor flush with the body instead they put it at an angle under the hybrid battery >:( ).

Also make sure that your positive jumper cable isn't touching the sway bar on the car while it's on the positive terminal, which will cause it to short out, 😅 LOL. @1:33. 😬Yikes, Lots of Fireworks 🎆

Seems like it's an easy line of code(s) or maybe a mechanical switch to have the main battery pack divert some volts to the dead battery for a backup jump if you're stranded.

Why would you need to keep cables once ev is running?

There's no benefit to sitting there and letting the battery get juice from the ICE car once the Start button is pressed and the EV is booted up.

Just hit Start and disconnect the cables. Don't keep the person helping you from leaving by staying hooked up to keep taking their electrons. You're just wasting their time. The power converter is engaged at that point and your battery is sucking down plenty of >12v power without any external hookup.

What a minute, whats the point of jump starting an EV when the whole point is to get the power to a resonable level so you can drive to a charging station? How on earth can you get enough juice to be able to make it there??? WIth a gas, all you NEED is to get it jumped. then you are off and running for a much gas you have in it!
