The Chinese Communist Party is recruiting college students as translators to help with its spying operations. However it's not telling the students their job involves espionage. In this episode of China Uncensored, we look at why the state is doing that, how the CCP uses front companies to carry out its dirty work, and what the repercussions could be for students who get hired by one of these front companies.

I worked for a lighting company owned by a lady from China. "Owned". We were supposedly the manufacturer. She would tell us expected sales numbers and they seemed rather high. I got invited to sit in on a meeting with reps from the factory who were coming into town. During the meeting, the factory people were telling us how much our sales goals were. What? They're supposed to be manufacturing stuff for us. So I called out their numbers and asked they came from. Everything was based on California, we were in Texas. I started questioning a lot of their numbers, expectations, market share, and how much of the market was aware of our existence. They had no answers and were visibly shocked at how I was addressing them. Later I found out from another worker that those were political representatives from China and that the CCP does in fact get a portion of "taxes" from every company and that they do tell each company how much money they expect beyond a certain level.

Hi Chris ! You should check this story (not a new one tho). A French mayor made an investigation. After investigating with other mayors the fact was they also had many (too many) Chinese girls marrying people working in the submarine base or some airforce bases nearby. Many of the Chinese universities were doing partnerships with French ones that were close to French military bases 😂 there’s nothing like a confidence on a pillow I guess…

It’s like them. They say they are not dictators, but they are really.

Working in Seattle turning apartments for new residents, I would say a good portion of the apartments we did turn were Chinese college students. We would say, "uh oh, the motherland needs their spies' info".

A Singaporean Chinese PhD student was caught in the US spying for China. He ended up in jail but was shortly deported to Singapore for further sentencing, which the Singaporean government later released him.

I love translating documents, most of it can be machine translated, you'd only have to read through everything about 3 times to redact the results to be presentable in front of 3 nice, smiling elderly gentlemen in shiny military uniforms.

They told me none of this has anything to do with politics, so I know I can trust them. They're high ranking government officials after all, their words are pure Gold.

When they say jump, you say how high.
That's pretty much how it's like to work in Chinese owned business.

As an internationalized Chinese student going to the US, I can say there’s as much students that blatantly hate the fact that you can’t criticize the government (including me), but really just can’t say it to others. Along with many others, I won’t be a Chinese citizen anymore in a few years (personally I won’t be American just because the government is just as controversial, but at least it’s better) for the reason that our current government is just too unfair to the people, and we realize that fact.

Tricked? I seriously doubt that. They know exactly what they are doing. They know their country well enough to know what they are doing.

"the only problem is they're not telling them they're spies" I dunno Chris. I think there might be a few more problems than that.

I am the 2006-2007 asnmsu attorney general and had a student seek help from our free legal help. My advisor turned him away and pulled me into his office to tell me that this kid is a spy and not to help him. He may have been a spy, I don’t know, what I do know is he was a kid like me who fell asleep on a cell phone with his girl friend and got a $1600 bill because he didn’t realize how it really worked. People were threatening to sue him and he was scared. I say him down at my cubical and told him the reality was that there was very little anyone could do to him and not to worry so much. It was not a huge deal. He shows a few days later to let me know that T-Mobile had dismissed his bill and thanked me fir the reassurance. Fast forward 15 years and I am certain most Chinese people are spies.
