“Mom told me, ‘We named you Muskaan because you were born with a beautiful smile!’ And true to my name, I grew up smiling. But during middle school, my smile disappeared. 
Mom’s government job demanded she’d work in different cities & I’d have to change schools frequently; I had no friends. This caused me to retreat into a shell & become a target for the bullies. At 13, I lost my sense of self; I hid my pain from mom too… 
Around the same time, mom got transferred to Chandigarh; I grew anxious about attending a new school. But thankfully, my school had a counselor for students to talk to about their mental health. 
The hardest step was going to my counselor’s office & saying – I need help. But to hear him reply, ‘I’m here for you’ felt comforting. 
And so, I started visiting my counselor & with his guidance, I took steps towards being positive. I began volunteering with various NGOs & formed meaningful friendships! And as I healed on the inside, the happier I was on the outside…
After 2 years of counseling, my grades improved too. And after I topped my college, I realized I wanted to do for other kids what my counselor did for me – I, too, wanted to become a counselor.
And just then, I came across the Master’s course for Psychology at Harvard! I said, ‘I believe in myself’ & applied. And 2 months later, I got the best email, ‘You’re accepted to study at Harvard!’; I was the youngest Indian to get in! And the happiness in mom’s eyes was indescribable. 
However, her look was also mingled with worry. She said, ‘I’m proud of you. But I can’t afford this.’.. 
The path to Harvard has been expensive— Rs. 2.5 lakhs alone went into my application & visa fees! My mom is a single mom & the breadwinner; she’s putting down her savings for me. Still, Rs. 23 lakhs more are required for me to study there… 
I’ve worked extremely hard to get where I’ve gotten, but to go further ahead, I need your help. It took me a long time to find the will to dream, & now that I’m close, I don’t want to give up on it…”
