Fitting Internal Doors Efficiently

This is how I have always fitted my doors, in a round robin way. My old tradesman Dara taught me this method when we worked for the council and it stuck.

Nice to watch somebody else fitting doors, just finished after 34 yrs of doing it.

Firstly i always tap door on lock block to make sure there is one there, had doors with no lock blocks in, after hanging them.

I always used a bit of masking tape stuck on both faces of door to mark hinge side, better than a pencil mark.

The doors you took off so heavy and weird veneer on the faces seemed to dent very easily, and 4 out of 6 arrived with dents in them, best suited for recycling as fire wood.thankfully only fitted them once.

Always chopped hinges out with a 1.5 inch chisel, old school.

Why use such heave duty hinges, theyre not needed and 3 on kitchen and bathroom doors as moisture can make them swell in the centre and stick on rebate.

Great job. Not sure just how tight you ended up making them to the jamb (lining) on the hinge side, but you should make sure there is a little bit of a gap so you don't end up with it binding the very next time it gets a fresh coat of paint. Nothing worse than seeing the paint all peeled off where it rubs on the stop.

Great video, but one trick I’ve also done before, as a old door opening is never perfectly plumb or level head, I check the old door all the way around in the opening and see how good the margins are round it, if it’s perfect, I take the door off, smash off the handle and then sit it ontop of the new door and draw round it. Mark all hinge positions and router them out, job done haha

I finished my 4yr apprenticeship in 1989, I'm 58 and retired now, I worked as a self employed carpenter, including fitting internal and external doors in private houses in Sheffield for over 30 years. 

I'd just like to say what a pleasure it is to watch a really good joiner like yourself at work. I have fitted thousands of doors in exactly the same way as you. With the exception of the impact driver ( I preferred a drill driver, more control), the hand router came later on in my career as did the planer and plunge saw.

I would say, for your own satisfaction and more referrals, remember it's all about quality, not speed.

I could go on and on, but I won't. Great video, all the best for the future guys.

Chopping the hinges closer to the checks do you not run the risk of the door binding on the hinge side?

Do you not check the head for level before you measure? Also well worth investing in an hinge jig it’s a lot quicker but keep up the good work nice to see someone happy doing their job 👍

Defo hinge jig... trend has a good one 👍 i would check the old door against a new door... as someone else said. Number the frame, cut the door, then set the hinge jig and router it out. Use the corner tool to cut the hinges square. Also, by trend! Rince and repeat. Complete all the doors, then do the handels and keeper plates if required! Jigs and a good system of working get you through 🎉
