How to Install a Pre-Hung Interior Door for the First Time, Like a Pro!

This is the beginners guide to installing and finishing a pre-hung door.

I've hung a decent amount of doors and there's a lot of tricks and a specific order of operations to get super-pro results! When doing the trim, it's much easier to do one of the sidetrims first, then the top trim and the last sidetrim. Reason being that starting with both sidetrims results in having to match 2 opposite 45 degree angles. Finishing of with one of the sidetrims instead let you match the 45 degree cut in one end and the easily finecut the length at the 90 degree cut :)

It's also a recommended when doing casing to glue your miters. They will be less likely to open as the materials expand and contract with temperature changes. Miter springs clamps are great to clamping the miter while the glue dries.

👏 proud that you are trying all this stuff yourself! Tip for the doors. Be sure to caulk around the edges of the door as well as any area with gaps with caulk. Don’t use spackle! it will crack over the years and door caulk will last much longer.

Maybe this tip will help you, or someone reading this comment. I used to put my level on the floor and shim it up like you did, but instead now I just hold my level up across the opening horizontally infront of me and mark a line at each side of the opening. You can then measure from the floor to your lines and itll tell you how out of level the floor is.

When I'm using a level, I'll flip it side for side as the vials may shift over time. If it does, then you split the difference between the flips.
