Stanley Wong here. I’m the guy that played the quant. Cool to see this scene still making an impression.

As an Asian, I felt this. Even Asians can see it in other Asians faces. That boi got that legendary super saiyan asian gene.

this cuts out the real punchline, when the quant has a cutaway scene & reveals he speaks perfect English, + placed 2nd in that competition. Hilarious & terrifying movie, a rare combo…

The very next scene of this is “Yang” speaking directly toward the camera and he fluently states that he’d never been to China and is a U.S citizen.

Most unrealistic part of this scene is a hedge fund manager not knowing what a quant is, there’s no way a hedge fund manager who actually makes and is entrusted with large funds to invest has no idea what a ‘quant’ stands for, it’s been one of the most common job titles in the industry for 30 years.

I’m Asian and this pretty much happened to me.

I work in market research and we were trying to model sales for a new product our client was looking to introduce. I did all the work to think through the problem to design the research and prepare the presentation.

My boss and I took it to our client. The client asked my boss all the questions about the product, but when it came to the math questions, the client asked me. The client just assumed that I was the one who did the modelling (which I was😅), but he also assumed that was the only thing I did or could do.

For those that don’t know how 2008 recession happened or what it was.

Banks gave mortgages to people that couldn’t afford them. So you’ve got 8 people who’ve bought 100k homes who live in the same street, they’ve also got little to no equity in the property at the start, usually it’s 10 percent) . Side note, What houses are valued at is roughly determined by how the neighbouring houses sell. Of these 8 people 2 of them default on their 100k loans after paying 10k. So banks seize the house and they are only after their 90k. So they sell the house for 90k. Now the other 6 neighbours, maybe they’ve just taken the loan out. Now their property is valued at 90k and they’ve got 100k to pay back. So they hand their keys back and say they want out and just accept the Couple grand they sunk into it as a loss. Now the property market starts to crash as people either default by not paying back or just hand the keys back.

So the mortgage companies lost money right? No.

So you’re the bank, you’ve got this 100k debt. Over 30 years the interest will net 40k profit. But what if a company offers you all of the 100k back and a 5k finders fee. Well that’s no risk to you. You’ve got 5k profit. Well the people buying this loan are pension funds. People who when they retire after paying into a lot for 40 years are hoping to have a decent monthly income. Now that pension company has nothing but houses that are losing wealth every week. Also property developments that are part way through construction are bailed on. Investors lose out big time, investors never risk their own capital in these developments either.

All of this was because banks were told that the government would bail them out if they gambled and lost.

So they intentionally approved loans to idiots, sold them to the public and then washed their hands of all responsibility.

These guys in the movies saw the incoming bomb and decided to short the stock.

Morally wrong, yes. However I can’t blame them.
