Like Dr. Thaler's sense of humor. He has a couple of books out. What they are discussing and demonstrating in this clip is an economic bubble. If you watch the movie, early on, you might note that that there was a federal subsidy of some sort for housing that was supposed to have ended a couple of years after the point in time that the movie starts. Most haven't read the fine print, so to speak, in the movie, and that is the source of the thematic tension.

What isn't explained is why these people are motivated to bet so heavily on something which seems absurd.

So synthetic CDO's are basically gambling. No trading of assets or buy/sell actions, just a straight bet on the outcome of an event. Why wouldn't the government regulate that like all other gambling and demand their share in taxes?

I get this part of movie, but it was never dumbed down for the average audience. Like my girlfriend for example when we watched this in theaters. All she saw was Selena Gomez and didn't understand anything else.
