Simple Corn Bread. Simple is Best when it comes to cornbread.
Cast Iron Skillet Buttermilk Cornbread Southern Style, no sugar or flour
2 C self-rising cornmeal (yellow best)
2 C buttermilk (can use regular milk but buttermilk best)
2T oil for skillet
4T cold butter grated with cheese grater
2 eggs
Heat oven to 425 degrees
cook for 25-25 minutes
*If not using a self-rising cornmeal add 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp salt

February 16, Thursday, 2023. Probably the best cornbread I have ever made. I melted the butter, and had to bake a little longer (did not have a cast iron skillet, just used a glass pie plate). THANK YOU for this simple recipe. 👏👏👏

My grandmother was born in 1888 in Virginia, this is very near to her recipe that I learned from my mom. I have always used lard or strained bacon grease for the skillet and enough to come up and partially cover the top when I pour in the batter, which I tend to make a bit thinner, makes the top more brown and crispy. It is a pure joy to hear your lovely southern accent, it reminds me of my childhood. New subscriber.

I've never added sugar or flour to my cornbread I only have ever made mine with cornmeal, buttermilk, and eggs, and fat that's it.If there's no buttermilk there's no cornbread exactly! I've been born and raised in the south (Alabama)all my life and this is the way my great grandmother that raised me from the age of three taught me to cook.
