People should mention that VRAM is never a justification for higher prices, the cost of more VRAM for GPU makers is just 2 - 10 $ or euro

Nvidia couldn't afford you and the cat as CO-CEOs.

So...watching a lot of the PC channels (GN/HU/HC/J2C/DO/etc.) it took me a bit longer to warm to Jason. But what I realize is while he is enthusiastic, he really cuts to what the best value components are. And what he is trying to do is make sure you feel HAPPY with the purchase you made and aren't left with regrets.

Like if you look at Jason's channel and the others, they all basically agree on where you should spend, what the value components are, etc. The other channels are great if you want some testing numbers and lab stuff. What Jason does well is affirm that with "Hell yeah, I built the right rig". Amid all the doom and gloom (which he will mention), make a smart purchase and feel HAPPY.

As someone in the process of building a rig, I really appreciate your vids. In these dark and uncertain times, we need to feel happy with what we bought and get to gaming.

A great 8GB card could be had for $250-$300 in 2016. It's now 2023, seven years of density improvements later, and 8GB of GDDR6 is about $27. There shouldn't exist a $300+ card with anything less than 16GB.

"More often than not YOU are the limiting factor, not the speed of the CPU." Well said and very true.

Locally here in Canada, Nvidia gpu's are still priced a tier too high despite the "discounts". It's 2023, not 2020

As someone who replaced my 12-year-old computer with one that has an RTX 4080.. I could tell you to wait.
I got ripped off big time.
I was expecting a humongous graphic improvement for the price, but I was let down.
I mean don't get me wrong.. way better! But the graphic card cost me $1, 300.. and it was not 1300 better.

I want to back up what Jason said, about the longevity of certain builds. My current rig is 2020 tech (AMD 3700X + 6800XT), but it still delivers "2023" performance. I can play games like Resident Evil 4: Remake (2023) at either 1440p, or 4K, 60fps with Very High to Ultra settings with tons of mods. The same is true for Dead Island 2 (2023). Granted, it depends heavily on how well (or not) a game is optimized. But overall, I'm getting the level of performance I want/expect for the price I paid. Starfield, and other games releasing in 2024, may finally start to demand more performance, but until that happens, I'm very content with my system and try and avoid the FOMO of having to have the latest and greatest. I usually upgrade every five years, not two or three like many.

I don't remember the creator (maybe it was more than 1... Or a fever dream, I dunno) but someone mentioned the idea of separating GeForce from NVidia so each could focus on their respective segments.

I'm still rocking with my trusted ROG Strix 2080 TI in 1440p. Looking for a 4090 at the end of this year though. Have a great weekend, Jason & Fam!

Fantastic GPU guide! You are bang on the money about buying a graphics card with less than 16GB VRAM in 2023 being crazy! As you also said, 8GB is 2016 gaming level, and there are lots of games that can't even manage 1080p ultra (a gaming resolution that hasn't been "impressive" for 15 years) even now, let alone any future proofing!

Your sensible GPU price guide was also perfect, so new GPU prices are smashed down to the current tier below
RTX4090 $1, 200 (current 4080)
RTX4080 $800 (current 4070Ti)
RTX4070Ti $600
RTX4070 $400
RTX4060Ti $250

You are not alone in this logical reasoning, most other tech channels are saying the same!

I recently purchased an RTX 3060 12GB over the RX 6650 XT and RX 6700 XT for a few reasons. First, NVIDIA's NVENC encoding. I don't stream but I at least want the option to do so down the line. Next, I work a lot with AI and LLMs where having an NVIDIA GPU and lots of VRAM matter. I heard you can get AMD GPU's to work with LLMs within Linux but I didn't want to take a chance. Finally, yes the RX 6650 XT is cheaper but not by much and the 6700 is more and doesn't include the previous features I mentioned.

In my opinion, the RTX 3060 12GB is the sweet spot if you want to game, stream and experiment with LLMs.

Might I suggest a less artificial benchmark for CPUs and RAM? Just compile UE5 in VS. Remember to freeze versions otherwise your results won't be comparable over time due to engine / compiler updates. Compiling large code-bases is something people actually have to do regularly and there's not a whole lot you can do to speed it up as a user safe for swapping components or scaling up in the cloud. Would also be helpful for us coders to have a table handy for reference when the next upgrade cycle comes around :)

I'm new to PC building, wondering why bottom-mounting motherboard layout (CPU facing up) isn't more common. It would allow a native vertical GPU mounting without using riser cable, the graphic card would now directly sit on the PCIe slot which completely solve the sagging problem, the GPU intake fans now would face the side panel instead of bottom giving it better airflow. A whole new panel would be opened up for fans/radiator mounting.
Other than maybe taking up slightly more table space I don't see much down side to this.

GPU prices as high as it is (4 digits) because consumers let them get away with it. Consumers bought from scalpers at that price level so manufacturers knew that consumers were willing to pay and they learned a lot from it. Worse is when some of them adopted predatory strategies such as under shipping (I hope it backfired significantly for them) in addition to overpricing. They can release newer gen as often as they want for all I care. It’s a never ending upgrade and if you try to keep up with the trend. I think consumers should consider making these manufactures know that we want prices back to how it was before the pandemic or it will never get cheaper. It’s mental conditioning. Choose your priorities wisely folks.
