The National Dish You Never Heard Of (Bobotie)

I am on a mission to try and rate every single country's national dish to figure out which is the best national dish in the world(according to me). Today we're trying South African Bobotie: it's a spiced meat "pie" topped with a simple custard. What am I gonna rate it?

Worked with a South African chef about 20 yrs ago, and he put bobotie on the menu for a few weeks. I loved it, and I believe I still have the recipe. He was adamant that the chutney required had to be a specific brand called Mrs. Balls. It's easily available in the UK, but I don't know about anywhere else.

South Africa has a lot of different cultures and cuisines so choosing a national dish is really difficult, but I think Bobotie is about as close as you are going to get. I myself absolutely love Bobotie and I am so glad you enjoyed it as well. I'm loving this series as I'm also learning quite a lot.

I have eaten this (as a Dutch person), and it was amazing. I got the recipe from the south african mother of my friend and I still have it for when I need some amazing food (also it's in original South African language, which is really funny)

Bobotie is normally served with begrafnisrys (funeral rice), which is yellow rice with raisins.

It is a Cape Malay dish which has been adopted by the Afrikaner community many years ago

I doubt whether is can be seen as the national dish. Stywepap en vleis (form mealie porridge and meat) is probably closer as most communities in SA has some version of it

I'm south African and I have this alot... Although I leave the sultanas out... Can't deal with the taste of it... But yeah, it really is an amazing dish... You should try it with yellow rice and that red beetroot salad stuff

I am from South Africa and I love Bobotie but another national dish we have is "potjie kos" as wel as "braai vleis" ( we literally have a day dedicated to "braai vleis" on 24 September )
