It takes exactly the same amount of force to lift; you just spread it out over more time.

Only this this type of mechanism with worm gears. It does not transfer motion backwards. Use any other type of gear the second you let go the weight will fall and the shift will spin uncontrollably

Work in equals work out. Work equals force times distance. So exerting a small force at great distance means a great force over a small distance. It’s a trade off between distance and force.
