Why General Grievous Is Always Coughing #shorts

According to the novelization of Revenge of The Sith, and a key episode from the original de-canonized Clone Wars animated shorts, Mace Windu was the one who gave General Grievous his signature cough.

When Grievous doesn’t need air as he is shown to be able to breathe in space when he broke the window on the invisible hand, and jumped out into space, but he still coughs.

I thought he had the cough because his species had 4 lungs and he had to lose 2 for the cybernetics, so he couldn't really breathe properly

A tidbit I read somewhere about his cough was that the creators of the 2003 miniseries forgot to incorporate his cough and so they later made Mace Windu crush his chest. I do not know if this is true, though.
