The pilot who basically did a hammerhead and pulled out real close to the water was then U.S. Navy Commander Richard "Fox" Farrell (VF-84 XO). He did kick up quite a bit of seawater and was really pushing the envelope with the Tomcat. WWII ace-in-a-day Archie Donahue was one of the Zero pilots. The Zeroes (converted AT-6 Texans) were flying with the throttle to the stops and the Tomcats were flying at stall speed (note wings fully extended in most scenes). That was so they could get both aircraft in the same shot at the same time. There is a two hour interview with the wingman, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Alan “Shoes” Mullen, discussing behind the scenes filming, "THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Movie - Shoes Interview | Mover Clips".

That sidewinder probably costs more than the zero...

The fact that this movie was released *6 YEARS* before “Top Gun” (1986)…

I'll bet that if an Imperial Japanese Navy pilot from 1941 saw a missile heading their direction they'd only have just enough time to say in Japanese 「何?!」lol

The F-14 is such an interesting aircraft, and its also REALLY big. Like you can't really get an idea as to the scale of it unless you see it in person.

The best "What if" history movie ever. Shame we didnt get to see a Pearl Harbor with F-14s vs Zeroes.

the sound of M61 vulcan canon in this scene is just perfect, I wish Topgun Maverick did the same

Strange to believe the Tomcat to us is right now is older than a Zero was when it first flew for this movie. Plus, to imagine that an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile cost as much as an A6M Zero in WWII.

When I first watched this movie ages ago on VHS it was fascinating. And still is :)

This is one of the only films that had Nimitz fully in the feature, without building sets, love this film, with Martin Sheen, who will later become Matthew Cuthbert, in the more recent Anne Of Green Gables Iterations.
Take care, and all the best.

This was the movie that cemented the F14 tomcat in my heart. Not Top Gun, but a kind of cheesy sci-fi flick of all things. The camera shots and angles really shows just how majestic of a bird the ‘Cat was.

I always thought it was cool how they had the Zeros react like the vets they would have been at the time, heads swiveling for the threat and taking shots when they could.

Scene of firing sidewinder is same one used in top Gun several times over. One scene had multiple applications

Fun fact : The nose over dive that the F14 does at 3:25 was done way outside the Tomcats listed envelope and safe altitude for such a maneuver and the pilot himself admitted he nearly crashed the aircraft.
