RIP Charles Durning, the actor playing Senator Samuel Chapman.
(February 28, 1923 – December 24, 2012)

He was a decorated WW2 vet & he was in first wave of infantry landing on Omaha beach during D-Day. He was the ONLY survivor of his unit that day. Just nine days after D-Day he severely wounded by a German anti-personnel mine, taking six months to fully recover. He later saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. By war's end he was decorated with the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.

Senator: "I want inquiries as soon as we return"
If they did return to DC
The rest of the comittee:"What? you must be dreaming"

And to think it was only 33 years between 1941 and 1974, the year that the F-14 was introduced. Amazing! -mikenotpaula.

The F-14s were sub-sonic, because everyone on the yacht could hear them coming, before they flew overhead.

I grew up around air bases in the late 70s early 80s .I remember these aircraft when they were practically new and the best...flybys and the noise around the town like this were common .

While a long time ago, I was a pre-teen when the F14 was under development at Gruman. It consumed the Long Island NY landscape, as so many people that lived on Long Island worked for Gruman at the time. While the F14 may pale in comparison with modern day fighter jets, it was an awesome achievement in engineering.

In 1941 the US markings was a red ball on a white star in a blue circle. The senator would not recognize a star on blue circle with square white wings an a red stripe adopted in 1947

This is just one of the best scifi scenes in movie history. I love how they are looking at these thunderous triangles soaring into the sky having no idea what they are.

This is my most favorite part of the entire movie, movie as a whole is awesome, but this scene takes the prize in my opinion.
