Why Can’t You Always ‘Complete’ Yawns?

Repeated incomplete, unfinished yawns are often manifestations of underlying anxiety or stress. When you are stressed or anxious, you can’t “let go” enough to relax fully and achieve that full muscular stretch, causing a feeling of annoyance or dissatisfaction with the yawn.

When you yawn, you end up stretching a lot of muscles in the face and the chest, limbs, and abdomen. This stretching sends signals to the part of the brain associated with experiencing good sensations. Being stressed or anxious can prevent completing these actions.

The Thompson Cortisol hypothesis suggests that cortisol, a hormone that plays an important role in stress, is briefly elevated when one yawns. Excessive yawning may be a sign of stress and anxiety, leading to an incomplete yawn in conjunction with an unconscious inability to let go.

If you are stressed or anxious, you will not fully relax and achieve this full muscle stretch, which will make you feel angry or dissatisfied with yawning.

After reading the comments it’s nice to know I’m not alone and that it is in fact due to my anxiety. F anxiety, man.

For those looking for a 'fix' I've found that holding your breath 'in' longer while your lungs are full and forcing out a loud, long noise on the exhale helps a bit. Not a perfect fix though

Yea this sounds pretty accurate. I randomly started experiencing this two days ago while at work. Like I hav the urge to yawn and can’t complete the yawn and random sighing breaths as well. I work in a medical setting so I was able to take my vitals signs and all were stable. No shortness of breath just a weird manifestation of severe anxiety

I’ve been like this since I was young. My family always looks at me crazy when I tell them to not look at me or bother me when I’m in the middle of a yawn. It never feels right tho and I can never get a good yawn

I have it really bad that even when I finish a yawn (which usually takes like 10 tries) I immediately get into another cycle of incomplete yawns

It’s been 2 days and I’ve been yawning constantly unless I’m asleep, it’s annoying because it never completes. I’ve not had a good yawn in 2 days, it’s quite frustrating. Sometimes 2+ times a minute

A little tip to those who struggle with completing a yawn:

Stand up.
Chest puffed.
Relax your gut (let it “hang”).
Breath through nose “into” solar plexus.
As your breath through your nose, initiate the yawn 🥱
Like if it worked and comment if you tweaked the steps for succes. Much love 👊

So I watched a 3 min video only to tell me at the end that I'm stressed.

It's weird; I have this problem, my mom has it and my older brother has it. I've had it since I was a child. It's the most annoying feeling in the world. You're trying to sleep and you can't because you're constantly gasping for air and twisting yourself into the weirdest positions to somehow complete your yawn

I kinda have a way to fix this problem,
1. Try relaxing
2. When you fill the urge to yawn, try breathing in and out slowly from you mouth.
That's kinda it. idk if this works on others people or not
Edit: also take breaks between yawns

This just started happening to me about 5 weeks ago, In getting discouraged now, reading that people have had this for years. I just can't deal with it. It came on so suddenly and I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I'm missing something around my back head/neck to complete yawn... I remember how good it felt, now it feels so incomplete.

All I wanna know is what's the main cause of this & how do we stop it?
& Yes I suffered from anxiety & panic attacks like 5 months ago. But I've managed to control that now, so what's with the uncontrollable yawning???

I haven't been able to complete a yawn in over 3 years. If this video doesn't work, I'm gonna be kinda bummed. If any of yall have anything that might help, any would be appreciated

never as bad as an incomplete sneeze ...i also sometimes have the urge to take a really relaxed full lung of air... but then it's like not completing fully like choking off. Then i just have to relax and wait a few minutes and then i can take a lung full of fresh air, so it feels "complete" hard to explain

Anxiety is annoying AF today just woke up nicely to attend my daily routine, started yawning nonstop and then later on started having incomplete yawn, atimes trying to sneeze but naa, with some weird feeling of dizziness and exhausted, , and that's how it happens atimes, i know i had recovered from asavere anxiety and panic attacks so i still have hope that ill just be okay in Jesus name because God once delivered me from savere anxiety was panics, Je will do it for me again and for everyone who believes in Him, we just have to pray persistently not think about it or rather just tell yourself it's just anxiety it will pass, hope this will calm down someone
