"Graphics cards get all the chicks"

1. rule of the game: NEVER BUY @ LAUNCH!

Always wait for third party cards and read the test articles. Choose the best one compared by performance/dollar for your use case.

For the CPU go for the best you can afford (this seems counter intuitive but the catch is that you won't be bottlenecked by the cpu in most cases anyway so they have potentially the highest lifetime in your system) on the newest chipset available.

Don't wait for cpu releases, wait for chipset or socket updates. You don't want to be the guy with the last gen socket, trust me. A fresh socket keeps you service life of your mainboard and mainboards are a hassle to change and relatively expensive for no real performance benefit.

Ram has no patterns because memory prices fluctuate heavily. Buy when cheap or when you need it.

For mainboard choice I go last: Look at the hardware you put into the system, and look at your current peripherals. Check what you need and then look at the different offerings. Choose the best one for you by checking for features you want/ price/ trust in manufacturer. Look up tests and reviews and don't buy to early. I found the second wave of boards are usually very good for any given socket.

For Cases I usually go cheap - swear a bit cause it sux and then buy a new one I should have bought directly...

PSU shouldn't be to cheap but it doesn't have to be something high end ether. Also look for deals from reputable brands (evga, seasonic...)

Last rule: Don't ever buy a whole new pc! From now on you jump one iteration of gpu and buy the next one. Cpu only gets updated if needed. Storage can be expanded depending on need. psu only needs changing when it dies. Ram can always be upgraded if necessary.

Just wanted to note my scheme to upgrading my pc. Maybe someone finds it useful.

I remeber a time when 250€/$ was mid range and 600€/$ high end GPU.

I feel personally offended.

“Hopefully at the same price point but with better performance”

I don’t like this statement. Seems that we just accept the bs price of the 2080ti and expect the next gen flagship to cost the same no issues with better performance.

How about we go back to something that costs a bit closer to the 1080ti whilst maintaining a great performance jump? We can’t just let the big companies increase the price of their flagships that drastically every 2-3 gens and then accept that price for the gens after that until the next drastic increase.

We need to move away from this mentality of seeing the RTX 3080ti being the same price of the 2080ti as a good thing. This is why I hope big navi not only competes with nvidia’s high end but also be cheaper forcing nvidia to reduce prices, same with what intel had to do. It’s a matter of companies reducing/setting prices accordingly, not reducing them in response to something to stay competitive.

Edit: some people are mentioning the lack of competition and whilst this may be a factor of the ridiculous price increase, it’s still not justified for the ~70% jump from the 1080ti to the 2080ti. Not to mention how bad these cards launched which were further emphasised with the lack of ray tracing titles even till this day and DLSS being a niche until recently with v2.0.

I expect much will launch, but few will make it to my home.

Now we just need AMD to step up their high end graphics card game.

With unemployment expected to be over 15%, and many people having dived deep into their savings during the pandemic, Any of those companies would be silly to release new consumer hardware until they have an idea of the impact the pandemic economy has on exchange rates and the amount of disposable income the average consumer has to spend on non essential products.

My main hope is that AMD introduces a challenger for Nvidia's higher end cards that doesn't have driver issues.

Best derpy face thumbnail yet!

I built my first PC when I bought my parts after your suggestion to buy.. and I couldn't be happier with that decision. I have a great pc that I can game on happily without long wait times for delivery. That said, I am still looking forward to new products. It's a great time to buy a PC, even with the human malware pandemic. Thanks for doing content still with all this craziness going on Jay!

Imagine thinking the competition will not catch up any time soon and remain seated on your overpriced lazy 4 core 8 thread chair and then suddenly see the competition is ahead of you and you fail to standup the right way because no prep was made and start to panic and lie.

Just put off buying new hardware until next year. I keep doing that and I'm still running a 2500k, 1070, and duck taped hopes and dreams from 2012.

I get it. Motherboards are the drummers, CPUs are the bass guitar and GPUs are the Lead guitar and vocals.

Whether it's AMD's Big Navi or the next generation of GeForce I can't wait to upgrade my gpu this year.

I’m eternally stuck between “wait for the new stuff so you won’t have to upgrade as soon” and “you don’t need that much performance, just buy 2000 series and save some dough”.
