1. plausible (adj):
- believable, reasonable or likely to be true.
~ His story sounded perfectly plausible.
~ You need to give a plausible explanation for why you use the programming language R in your social science research.

- of a person: good at sounding honest and sincere, even if they are not.
~ He is a plausible salesman, having succeeded in selling 34 luxurious cars this year.

2. abstain (v):
- restrain oneself from doing sth that you enjoy, because it's bad for you.
~ I have recently abstained from eating chocolate and yogurt with tapioca pearls.

- to choose not to use a vote, either in favor or against sth.
~ Ten people voted in favor, two against and one abstained.

3. engender (v): to cause a feeling or a situation to exist. This word is a fancy way of saying "to make happen".
~ Home engenders the immediate feelings of belonging.

4. sully (v):
- to damage or reduce the value of sth.
~ Alexander Hamilton's reputation was sullied after the affair with a married woman.

- to make sth dirty.
~ In an attempt not to sully my expensive white shirt while eating pizza, I have to take off that shirt and wear a dark T-shirt instead.

5. rebuff (v) (n): to refuse a friendly offer, request or suggestion in an unkind way = reject (v)
~ She rebuffed a classmate's invitation to the dance after hearing him gossip meanly about a friend.
~ Any attempt to invite me for dinner was met with rebuffs.

6. elicit (v): to get information or reaction from sb, esp with difficulties.
~ The survey sent to the students elicited 37 well-written responses.
