For this week's GRE Vocabulary Wednesday we'll be covering a set of GRE vocabulary words that have double meanings. In this 4-minute video, our GRE expert Chris Lele will go over six tricky GRE vocabulary words whose multiple definitions could trip you up on the test. Chris will explain both meanings of each word, and how you can identify the correct definition based on context clues!

1. maintain (v):
- Common meaning: to continue to have, to keep in existence.
~ You have to maintain a minimum balance in your checking account dear.

- affirm, assert, to express firmly that sth is true.
~ Senior accountants at the firm maintained that they knew nothing of the transactions.

2. check (v):
- check sth: to control sth.
~ She tied some strips of cloth around the wound to check the bleeding.

- keep sb/sth in check: control sb/sth.
~ However choleric you are, you must be able to keep your emotions in check when meeting him.

3. qualify (v): to add sth to a previous statement so that its meaning is less strong or less general.
~ I want to qualify what I said earlier - I didn't mean that you would fail in the GRE, only that you should have adequate preparation for the GRE.

4. wanting (adj):
- lacking sth.
~ The more I learn for the GRE, the more I realize how wanting I am in English vocabulary.

- not good enough.
~ Your paper was wanting in many respects. First off, you need a highly corroborated theory.

5. flag (v): to become tired, weaker or less enthusiastic.
~ After waving the flag for more than 2 hours, I started to flag.
~ His slow response as the leader of a nation pulled down an economy already flagging because of the Corona virus.

6. appropriate (v):
- to take sth for your own use, esp illegally or without permission.
~ I never appropriate my loved ones' food.
~ He appropriated a considerable amount of my company's money 5 years ago and got away with it. Now he is permanently bed-ridden. Karma is a bitch you know.

- devote money, assets to a special purpose.
~ Jeff Bezos has recently appropriated 10 billion dollars for research into saving the Earth's environment. What a great man!
