Prototyping a game in RPGMaker sounds like a great idea, I've made far too many projects that got bugged down with bloat and over scoping which have then died, So this seems like a good idea for getting the basics down and testing things on the quick, Cheers!

I like RPG Maker as a way to create art for lack of a better way to put it. I am a reasonably capable coder and sometimes do other things in other engines, but when I just want to relax I put on some lofi and I do parallax mapping, or write a little adventure and place it in a town I build up from RTP tiles. It is a bit like an adult coloring book. Some of those little sessions have become game jam games and in two cases fairly complex projects. I thin RPG Maker is unique in how pleasant it is to just play around with.

I agree that this is a great way to get into game development. I tried godot (another great option), gdevelop, unity, and unreal. Those engine took too much time to get anything done and i hit constant roadblocks with those. I use rpg maker mv and I love it. I've made a small project in just 2 weeks that was around 2 hours long. Granted i put some time into that (around 50 hours of work for 2 hours of gameplay)but it was so worth it and so satisfying. Not to mention the HUGE community around rpg maker. There are a ton of tutorials, forums, and plugins that are free to use to really make your project stand out.

The prototyping capacity of RPG Maker can be quite surprising. With the built-in ability to input code in more recent versions, you can break the mold and do anything.
I'm making a tactical RPG in RPG Maker because I want exploration phases occuring in the same maps as combat. Other makers seldom have that flexibility.

Glad you mentioned prototyping. I made a 30 minute demo of my game in RPG Maker before porting to Godot. It made it so easy to form a vision for it.

I used a lot of RPG MAKER 2000 before I got into game maker like 20+ years ago now. What I really liked was how some people turned it into a zelda-like game. You could sacrifice one of the 2 buttons they give you for a sword swing or a jump or something. I'm not sure how the engine has progressed but if they allow more buttons then you can definitely make a more dynamic zelda game.

Thank you so much! I didn’t even suspect that with this engine you can create something other than RPG.

I'm much more familiar with RPG Maker VX (which is what I started with) and RPG Maker VX Ace. I'm always totally amazed when I see videos like this with the quality of DIFFERENT animations and graphics!! Holy mackeral! Like, I'm only familiar with the basic "RPG" sprites from the first one, and my text boxes only have the head profiles. I would love to learn how to do some of those other animations (i.e. the tall sprites, for example), and the full body/half body text boxes (if possible in RPG Maker VX Ace of course). Just found your channel from this one video and I'll have to take a look at more!
Of course, I've just been having a blast with the basic "RPG" sprite looks for my games so far including the amount of awesome fan-made sprites/faces/etc. from the RPG Maker forums!

I like your approach to RM. I think its fun to push what rpgmaker can actually do genre wise. Sure you can make racing games and sword fighting action games in "better" engines but its just more fun in RM.

I remember being heavily into RPG Maker back when people still used rm2k and rm2k3. Even though, those didn't even come with a scripting language like Ruby or Javascript; they still managed to come up with some crazy systems just by using events. Things like 2d shooters, zelda-likes and I've even seen a platformer.
Some of the people who made those knew so much of the intricacies of how events worked!

I talk bad about RPG Maker all the time. Yeah, I think it is very limited... but it was my first game engine, back as a child with RM2000. Played LOTS of games. Had a lot of fun with it. Scripting with Ruby changed it all! Today, I'm a professional Unity Developer (never thougth gamedev was a reality in my country back then), and the first spark of passion with it came from Rpg Maker.

Holy crap. Prototyping is a brilliant idea. I've had this idea for a game for years and never did anything with it because it was supposed to be 3d and I have no programming experience.
