I Forced Myself To Play Only Mobile Games

Mobile games are a prominent market in the video game space, filled with millions upon million of players, but Kurt Indovina isn't one of them. However, that's about to change.

In an effort to learn about the vast mobile game market, Kurt locked his consoles up (to eliminate all temptations to play the games he knows and loves) and forced himself to only play mobile games for a week.

For seven days, Kurt went without his Xbox Series S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and 3DS, and relied on his iPhone as his sole game console. With no context where to start, he threw himself in the deep end in an attempt to understand the appeal of mobile games, and, quite possibly, find his next favorite game.

Kurt was familiar with the big games like PUBG, Genshin Impact, Call of Duty, and Diablo Immortal, but he was on a mission to find hidden gems; the games that take advantage of the phone in creative and unconventional ways. And, to his surprise, he found more than just a few games he loved, but formed an entirely new perspective on mobile gaming.

Games featured in the video (and Kurt's personal recommendations):
Florence
Bury Me My Love
Device 6
Songs of Bloom
Pry
Patterned

"Aimlessly downloading things, only to play them for a moment lose interest quickly OR HIT A PAYWALL and then delete them nearly as fast as I downloaded them"

THIS IS AS TRUE AS ITS GETS!

I finally watched this...and walked away IMPRESSED. Both the video was extremely fair towards mobile games...but also the EDITING of this video was really cool and fun.

Another great piece, Kurt! The great thing about this experience is it's universal. There is a time in our lives when mobile gaming is all we have due to being a poor college student, or being between jobs, etc. Most people own a console, or a PC, but not everybody. So, resorting to the phone, or iPad for our gaming fix is very relatable even if nobody talks about it. What's also interesting is how the vast majority have a skewed perception of mobile gaming due to the P2W and predatory MTX, just like those outside gaming in general often view GTA (violent & juvenile) and as the only example of what gaming has to offer... Although, that's changing, thankfully. Like all platforms, you have to dig a little to find the hidden gems, but once you do find them it's definitely worth it.

At first I excepted a classic ranting about Mobile games, but no, pleasantly surprised, well played and good video, I would watch more of that pace and chill dude!

Another great video, I remember playing certain gruesome games that sadly was pulled from the store; its another example of digital games being written in the sand, where what you invested can disappear forever more.

I am glad you found something to enjoy! I don’t think mobile will ever be my forte, but it’s good to know there are some creative and unique experiences there.

Kurt, this is awesome. First GameSpot video I’ve felt compelled to comment on. My biggest burning question is, what are the 3DS games that made that the hardest console to put away? As someone just getting into the 3DS system recently, I’m super curious what your favorite games are. Need to know what to buy from the eShop before it’s closed for good!

This is a great video. I am glad that you showed off some of the positive aspects of mobile gaming. There are quite a few mobile games that are good. Unfortunately, they are often overshadowed by the ones that have pay-to-win mechanics. I do have an issue with pay-to-win games as they ruin the experience by giving those who pay a competitive advantage. While I do understand that console and PC players bash mobile due to these shady practices, these players are also being hypocritical at the same time. For console and PC players, may I remind you that there have been pay-to-win games on those platforms for several years now. A few examples that have shown the same shady practice include Star Wars Battlefront II, NBA 2K, and Fifa. Fortunately, Star Wars Battlefront II got rid of it due to the backlash. What I am trying to say is that pay-to-win games are on every platform and everyone needs to speak up if they want this to stop, including mobile.

This was pretty well done. Points to everyone involved.

I actually enjoy mobile gaming more than I would like to admit. It’s so much easier for me to pick up and play a quick day in stardew valley instead of booting up the switch. Its a very good casual game experience. If I do want to get serious about gaming, then I boot up the PC or console, but as a day to day quick pick up and play, mobile is perfect.

Game developers are going the right way with mobile games regarding graphics, controls, story lines. The thing that really needs changed as mentioned by yourself and countless others is the P2W and countless ads in the majority of these games. They need to start treating these games like console and PC games and you pay a one time fee for the game, anything else you pay money for does not change how the game is played.

You should try a very interesting RPG called only one on mobile.

I honestly recommend checking Soul Knight and Implosion, both of them are originally from mobile and then ported to switch. I honestly think it's fun to play on mobile. finding hidden games which are absolutely gems.
