In this video, I demonstrate how to apply conditional formatting icon sets to text values. This is fairly easily achieved with numeric values, but it's not so obvious how to achieve the same thing with text values.

I demonstrate two methods in this video. The first applies if you want to use up to three icons and the second applies if you want to use up to five icons. Both methods use a combination of conditional formatting and custom number formatting.

What if the the values in column D are selected from a list of values (drop-down) instead of being manually entered? Data validation blocks VLOOKUP formula... so text values and their numeric values are stored on another sheet, how to specify column number in the range containing the value to return?

other versions of excel have different syntax for for the VLOOKUP, mine was: . (F9) was the cell that i wanted to have the number, equivalent to D4 in the video
