You NEED to be doing this if you want to build MUSCLE.

Alright so one of the most important aspects of your training that constantly gets overlooked is your tempo and this is actually something I’ve improved a lot on over the past year. Here’s a few videos I have from last summer of me lifting, and as you can see I’m not really controlling the weight, and it looks like I’m just going through the motions, repping it out until I hit my desired rep range, which was pretty much exactly what I was doing. And because of that I didn’t actually make any progress for about 4 months and I always blamed it on just being lean and not having energy which was somewhat true, but more importantly I was overtraining and not using proper technique. So when I started my bulk in August I made it my priority to drop the weight on every single exercise I was doing, yes every single one, and made sure that every single one of my sets was done with purpose. I controlled the concentric and eccentric, I controlled my change in direction, and I stopped focusing on just hitting a certain number of reps, and started recognizing each rep as its own. My tempo now looks like this and my progress has skyrocketed and I have to give credit to ryan jewers, cayle, and jpg on tiktok who have all been a massive influence on my training, but if you find yourself in the same boat, understand that quality is much more important than quantity and instead of just throwing in more sets, make sure that all your sets are done with intent so you can provide the most stimulus possible on all of your exercises and get the best out of your training.

I hope that helps and subscribe for more lifting tips! #Gym #Shorts

Here are the 3 people that helped me:

I highly recommend checking out their content and giving them a follow! Also, if you find yourself in the same boat where you're focusing more on just hitting a certain number of reps instead of treating each rep as its own, don't be afraid to drop the weight and slow down your tempo. Trust me, it'll 100% be worth it in the long run.

Looking to get protein powder, creatine, or any other supplements?

Thanks for all your great advice. The best part about you that many other trainers overlook is that you actually show your own personal failure and then proceed to show us how you succeeded in fixing your errors and becoming successful. Which shows us that you know what you’re talking about!

Thank you for this ! Important life lesson : be in the moment rather than just tying to get through

You can definitely make good gains doing speed reps as long as they’re
still controlled and engaging the muscles, the problem is most people start to use way more momentum as they do faster reps disengaging the muscles. There are benefits to doing both fast and slow reps and you will build muscle doing both as long as your form is good.

Control is everything. Nice video and pleasant reminder that slow and steady wins the race overall!

I'm probably about twice your age but I'm just learning to do this myself. I've been doing my pull ups with slow and deliberate movement in both directions, taking as much time as possible on the decline. I can do fewer at a time now, but I'm starting to grow again when hadn't for some time, and my grip is even stronger.

Me personally I have you and Squat University to thank for being smarter and better about keeping myself healthy and also teaching me about tempo. I had never taken a workout truly to failure until i incorporated tempo and controlling the weight for about 3 seconds down. Huge progress. Thank you

I did exactly what you did. Dropped the weight and focused on the tempo. Making sure i go up in weight only when I can hit reps with good form and tempo

Is funny this showed up in my recommended. I started doing this a week ago and I have felt the difference. I assumed it was because I have been away from the gym for almost 6 months but you just clarified it for me. Thanks a lot, I’ll be checking more of your videos now
