What do you need doing? Need + verb-ing - BBC English Class

The studio is a real mess - and Finn's not happy! He says: "This studio needs tidying!"
And in fact, that sentence is an example of the form he teaches you in this video. We call it need + verb-ing. But when and why do we use it? As usual, Finn has only 90 seconds to explain!

Is "taking care of" to be considered a form of "verb + ing" ? For example, "The patient needs taking care of", or " The problem needs thinking about carefully" . Here, somebody else "take care of the patient " and "Think about the problem carefully".

Let's call it "Need + Verb + ing"

We use it when something needs to be done but we don't want to say
the person who needs to do it.
because it doesn't matter.
maybe we don't know maybe it's more polite
umm( pretending to be like cute) just saying Lol


ok let's first
look at the some examples first

for example
This studio needs tiding
My hair needs cutting
umm My shirts need washing

so what we do have now first noun my shirt
then need or needs and then finally the Verb in the ing form of washing


so let's give another example
for example
Im your boss
you're writing a report
i don't want to say " You need to finish that report"
because it sounds too direct

I can just say "That report needs finishing"
You see? it's a little bit less bossy

and my shirts as you know it stinks
so i could say let me just say "My shirt needs washing"
You know because it doesn't matter
I wash it or if you wash it or if CAN washes it
whoever washes it
so there we are 90 seconds

all remainds is to decide who needs to wash my shirt
im not doing it.
