CHAIN Trimmer Head !? REVIEW AND TEST #2

Trimmer Head 5 Steel Blades Razors !? REVIEW AND TEST #1

I bought one of these a couple years ago. I attached it to my 42cc Echo brush cutter. I used it on very thick blackberry brambles. It cut right through them. I used a chopping motion from the top down, nice and slow, so the chains would mulch everything rather than just cut at the base. Definitely got the job done. The only drawback I see is potential danger to the user. I wore thick chaps, leather boots, a long sleeved sweatshirt, leather arm sleeves for welding, thick leather gloves, an old dirt biking chest protector, and a safety helmet with a visor. I didn't want any metal coming back at me. And while cutting the brambles, I clipped an old metal pipe I couldn't see sticking up from the ground. It sent sparks flying. Thankfully it was winter and just after a rain. But, I must say this thing does work well.

Probably worth having in the arsenal. Although more robust than string this is better suited for the open areas and switching to string for the more delicate perimeter obstacles.

This and similar products with linked metal cutting parts (eg chains) are banned in the EU and unless UK updates its legislation also in UK, This followed a fatal accident in Scotland where the end link of a chain flew off and severed the spinal cord in the neck of a person working away from the operation. Unlike plastic cords and hinged plastic blades the steel links have about 8 times the density and so at the same speed have 8 times the momentum if they are ejected, ie similar to a bullet. This is why only solid cutting blades (as on a brush cutting head) or plastic parts are allowed.

Great for bush stuff, but there is a reason we use nylon cord. It doesn't do significant damage to your good stuff like pipes building material & garden edgings! This chain will destroy all those things you don't wont touched. Keep this head for the bush & not around your home or you garden!

The HSE banned these in the UK last year following the death of a worker clearing a bank next to a road. His partner upslope was using a chain strimmer & a link broke off the end. The link hit him at the back of his neck where it joins his skull. He was killed instantly.

these things are incredibly dangerous. the chain broke on mine and wrapped around my lower leg giving me nasty lacerations and broken bones . i was lucky to keep my leg. It shredded the guard my shinpads overalls and steel capped Redwings. Don't even think of getting one.

Look Ma, I won't have to buy shoes anymore because my feet have been cut off at the ankles.

My grandfather warned me about a snapped chain being a lethal piece of shrapnel. This seems to be just a matter of time before there’s an “accident”! I’d throw on some bucking chaps and armoured steel toes. I know a guy who died home brewing stuff like this at home. It was all fun and games up till then!

Wow those are dangerous! A friend of my dad used a Sthil weed eater with the saw blade adaptor kit and hit a rock shattering the blade which hit his ankle almost cutting his foot off. I would guess the chains would do the same thing one comes apart.

Using something like this would be a disaster waiting to happen if you're in an area where you are cutting where the ground is not "organic dirt", but is silica sand. Steel discs that are made with chainsaw segments around the edge were found to start flying off the disc, as the sand destroyed the rivet heads that were keeping the teeth attached to the steel discs.

Lots of timid scared folks commenting here. Love this type trimmer, have used it for 3 summers and it shreds everything. If you are scared of shredding every kind of vegetation in sight stick with your cute little battery trimmer with some cotton string and you're well manicured feet.

Reality check: the drive cable between the motor and the trimmer head was never designed for these increased loads and does and will fail prematurely with this chain head. I worked in a repair shop for a few years and this weakness was noticed.

Similar device was pulled from the markets several years back. In certain situations, the links would break and become projectiles.

This is a good concept, it's about using the right tool for the right job, just like nylon wire is for grass cutting and blades for thick vegitation etc. its application should only be used for overgrown grass etc, i doubt it can be used with thick vegitation as it might either damage the machine or get tangled more often since its less flexible and thicker, if it also came with a clear platic sheild to fit the front end it would be alot safer aswell since anything it hits, for eg a pebble, it will fly with atleast 20× more force. Another downside is It will damage anthing soft like paint, water pipes, plants and fence's where this machine is actualy more handy.
