Where to set your Concept2 SkiErg damper for HYROX training

The HYROX rules say a preset of 5,6 or 7 - which is total nonsense. Here's how to set your training machine properly so it's the same as the race machine.

Makes me a little grumpy that HYROX don't care about this. Depending on the amount of dirt in your SKI ERG - setting the lever to 5,6 or 7 could mean you're massively undertraining - and you'll really feel it on the race floor.

So, I cleaned my machine (hoping the race ones are clean) and set the lever to 5 6 and 7 to let you know where to get the drag factor on the Concept2 Ski Erg you use in training so that it feels the same as the one you'll race on.

For those of you where are interested, I checked the drag factor after cleaning with the disc taken off the front and it’s 220.

Question: if you increase the drag factor will it allow you to hit better distance (granted you have the strength).? Kind of like a bicycle where higher gear will allow you to travel faster hence further with less turns.

Hi, ever thought of doing 1k training videos for the Skierg? Love your 1k program for rower by the way.

Is there a reason why a “clean” rowing machine would have a DF of 220’ish and a “clean” skierg would have a DF of 160’ish? Intuitively I would have imagined the similarity in mechanisms would have resulted in similar DFs, but perhaps given skiergs don’t work big leg muscles as much, there’s a logic to the DF being proportionately less. Best of luck at Hyrox tomorrow John. Looking forward to you using knowledge from Hyrox for a HIIT series of videos to help the rest of us get multifunctionally fitter.
