These tips are actually so helpful. I’m currently learning Japanese and sometimes it feels like I don’t know what to study and how to progress so I’ll definitely be trying out these tips 🙏🏽

I had a similar experience in France. I never learned a word of French, but on the plane trip over I learned a couple of basic words/phrases like 'hello' and 'do you speak english?' and I never met a single rude Parisian or French person. It's incredible how much people appreciate you attempting to speak their language and will respond in kind. I now treat the plane trip to any country the same. It's a challenge to learn as many useful phrases and words as I can (asking for the receipt, asking for food, asking for directions to the airport and bathrooms, how to apologise, get attention, yes/no, etc) and it's always been a great hit.

I can safely say that learning sentences and phrases are way more efficient than learning grammar. I could actually hold conversations when I disregarded grammar totally and just googled and memorised real life conversations

My way with English language was exactly the same as yours with Mandarine. It was in 90's. First phrases - I learned them just myself, without any teacher, listenning and reading a lot of English language content (TV, music and so on). Then I went to the school for 2 years to get some more vocabulary and grammar. After this my level was like intermediate or so. Then I studied only myself and I talked to many foreigners during my trips all around the Europe. I know I'm not perfect at English (British version) but I can communicate with all English using people, no matter if they come from the US, Australia, UK or Canada. Very good tips - I agree with you totally. Phrases, full sentences - this should always go as first. Greetings from Poland Bro!

Thank you Ryan. I was so frustrated with my english. Though my level is B2, I couldn't sound as native english speaker, and it's even worst when you need it for work.

I'll comeback to my roots when I was learning english, reading, listening and practice, over and over.

Now to get practice ! Greetings from Chile.

This is exactly what I'm doing with Japanese and it's working great! For a couple months I was really feeling that I wasn't improving much, so I started with this app called Anki. Anki is a flashcard software system that uses recall and spaced repetition to help you Sentences. It's a lot more efficient than traditional study methods, and you can either greatly decrease your time spent studying or greatly increase the amount that you learn. So I used Anki and wrote down hundreds of sentences and Anki basically made me able to remember those sentences. And now I am at a level where I can comfortably speak Japanese with people, of course I am still not perfect and I am still somewhat lacking in vocabulary, but I am much better than I would have been if I just studied individual words.

Glad I found this video. Been learning Spanish for a few years now. Really adding in Comprehensible Input a lot, and I suppose I’ve suspected I needed to add in a lot more sentences and phrases as memorization and speaking practice, but after seeing your videos and hearing your methods here I think it solidifies it.

(my level of English is between B1 and B2, so for now I used a translator to speed things up)

Personally, I learn English with the help of my hyperfixations. I tried to make sure that my YouTube would be filled with videos in the language that I am learning - English. and when I gain a new hyperfixation, I rush to YouTube, where, even if I search for content in my native language, it will later appear in English - and there will be even more of it. although I'm still looking in English)

and songs also help. When you want to learn your favorite song, you memorize word combinations and phrases from it. and you want to understand what you are singing - that’s why you translate it. Besides this, it is much easier to remember a word through association through a song - through context. for example, this is how I easily remembered the word “addicted”. when my English level was still A2-B1, I really fell in love with the song “addiction” - and I will never forget this word. The book by Reki Kawahara, the accelerated world, was also very useful - the nicknames in English motivated me to study it further and replenished my vocabulary with several unusual names of flowers.

Looking back, tips #1 & #2 were probably why I got a decent grasp on Japanese (only lacking real life practice). I learned from both anime shows and a travel handbook I happened to pick up. The travel handbook was important so I learn grammar, but anime helped me pick up pronunciations & less common vocabularies. More nuanced grammar comes in other Japanese media like dramas, movies & YouTube videos.

it makes sense that focusing on sentences and phrases would help with learning. I think the context clues just are a much more efficient way to sus out meaning than to learn words one by one.
