DJI RC vs Smart Controller - Stats - Testing - Opinion

Recently I purchased the new DJI RC and have been using it to fly my Air 2S and I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. After posting a recent video highlighting the RC controller and how it performed with my Air 2S I received several requests to do a comparison of the RC and the Smart Controller which previously came bundled with the Air 2S, so here’s a side by side real life comparison between the two as well as the side by side specs from the DJI website.

Hey, thanks for doing this comparison. Currently flying the Air 2S with the Smart Controller. I had a mishap and snapped one of the antennas. Super glue fixed it, but it is loose again and it bugs me. Trying to rationalize replacing it with the RC Controller and this info really helps. Plan on keeping the Air 2S for awhile. Better range and no antenna to break along with lighter weight. Think I might pull the trigger.

Looks like you ran the range test for the Smart Controller in SPORT mode (30-32 mph) vs the CINE mode (18-19) mph for the RC Controller based on the video. That would probably make a big difference in range would it not?

I just purchased the RC controller and took my first flight yesterday and it was great. Phone dimming no more. It wasn't overly sunny so I will see how it performs in Sunlight.

I’ve the original Smart Controller & with my 2s & Mini 2 it still works fine .. I wouldn’t fly the distance shown anyhow …
one major plus for the original you didn’t mention is the large amount of drones it can fly with from Phantom 4 pro, the Mavics, Air & Air 2 & Mini 2 compared to the new RC which is nearly as redundant now as Original Smart controller since your vid a New version with the Air 3 is out .. If something works for you I still use it so stick with my set up now ..
DJI have become like Apple products.. as soon as you buy one it’s nearly old tech .. also buying more attachments filters etc is costly.. Thanks for review ☘️😀

DJI RC / DJI Fly app lacks the Image enhancement ( LUT ) function which worked well in DJI GO4, and it is very annoying when recording in M-log, because hardly anything can be seen on the display... everything is flat and grey ( as it should be), but also makes harder to make good compositons. I truly hope an update will solve this....

The range/signal of the DJI RC outperformed the DJI RCN1 in my experience. The DJI RC does run the Fly App a little slower when it comes to menus and touch screen responsiveness. This does not at all effect the stick controls, so that is not an issue. I just wanted to add my experience. Great comparison video!

Thanks for covering this topic. I had a strong curiosity about the Smart Controller but considered the price tag to be a barrier at the present. Now I don’t feel like I’m missing out so much. I know I would be disappointed with the battery life as I often fly through my three aircraft batteries putting in 100 minutes of in air time.

Good comparison. Unfortunately for me I need the flight automation as I use things like Dronelink and other software a lot, so not being able to install on the RC is a non starter for me. But if I didn't have the constraint I'd certainly be looking at the DJI RC.

I got the RC for my Air 2s, I was thinking about saving money and getting the Smart controller instead of the RC pro, but definitely no point now after this vid, thank you 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀

The RC does not have the same compability as the smart controller right now…., Whenever they make the RC compatible with mini 2 and Mavic Air 2 I’ll buy one !!
