Easiest Way to Save Tomato Seeds

Показать описание
Saving seeds from tomatoes is easy and straight forward. Tomatoes are self pollinating, however they can cross pollinate with other varieties. To save seeds true to the variety, cover the tomato flowers with a mesh and hand pollinate the tomatoes by tapping on the flowers. There are two ways to save tomato seeds. 1. Let the tomatoes dry out on the plant and then extract the dried seeds from the tomatoes. 2. Harvest a ripe tomato and cut it open. Extract the seeds along with tomato juice and gel. Transfer the seeds to a strainer and wash the tomato juice and gel out of the seed until the seeds are clean. Dump the seeds on a paper towel and let the seeds dry of a week. After drying, the seeds are ready for long term storage.

For longer term storage its best to let the seeds and gel ferment (with a little water) for 3 days then strain and rinse them and dry on a paper plate.

For every gardening question I have, I should just head to your channel, first. You consistently put out videos that answer my questions! Having been a subscriber for so long, you'd think I'd be as expert as you, by now. Thankful for all the wisdom you share!

During the past winter I still had tomatoes on my plant because I got it growing too late. I felt really terrible when the plant froze so I took off a few unripe frozen tomatoes and buried them. I tried growing some from seed indoors and the plants never took off but lo and behold I went outside and I had two tomato plants growing from the tomatoes that I buried. Now I'm eating tomatoes from one plant in the other one has not given me tomatoes yet but is filled with flowers.

Thanks for sharing the two methods. I’m going to use the dry method since I live in a drought-affected area and want to conserve water wherever I can!

Yes I do this rather than fermenting them

All you need to do to harvest seeds from a ripe tomato is squeezed the seeds out onto a paper towel, spread them out, blot them with another towel and let them air dry on the paper towel. Once dry store them. When ready to plant just rip the paper into small sections and plant. Yes, with the paper towel, it will just disintegrate in the soil.
Simple: squeeze, spread out, air dry, store. Plant when ready 😊

wow this is the second time i had a need and you uploaded a video on it ! For example, I had some seeds (in that gooey slime they come in) in a ziplock bag in the fridge, because i had not thought of (or seen) a way to properly clean or store them.
