Tomato Seed Saving The RIGHT Way

Fermenting your tomato seeds is not required and they can be saved by simply drying them to a paper towel but fermenting cleans them, weens out bad seed, improves germination, reduces disease, and allows the seed to last longer in storage!

I just put the unwashed seeds on a kitchen towel (or toilet paper, )let it dry, write on the paper what type of tomatoes they are, and store until needed.

I simply chuck my nicest overripe tomatoes back into the garden and boom, next year I’ve got “volunteers” without any effort. If it works here in Maine with our -30F winters, it should work anywhere.

I just put my rotten tomatoes in my compost. Then I have tomatoes everywhere I spread it! 🤣 best part about tomatoes as weeds is smelling them on your hands every time you kill em. Love that tomato branch smell.

This is a Romanian native tomato, it's called inimă de bou, and can reach up to 1 kg per piece. This is one of my favorite tomato, the taste is out of this world. 💕 🍅

I scrape out a spoonful of seeds. Then I use a butter knife to spread them out on a paper towel roughly 6 x 6 inches. Let it dry a couple of days. Label it and store in a plastic baggy. Next year I pull them apart with the paper towel they are stuck to and plant. I've been doing that for 5 years and always have more than enough plants.

Heirloom tomatoes can't be beat. Also, seeds from hybrid tomatoes may or may not produce the desired cultivar, if they germinate at all. 😊

That is one incredible tomato. A salt shaker and I could eat that whole thing. With a cucumber on the side.

I just let them dry on a paper plate completely then into an envelope . Works great. All my life.

That seems like a lot of work - my grandmother would just put them on a paper towel until dry, they lasted years. Of course, she planted every year. She and Grampa had a huge garden and grew everything they could.

Just the video I've been looking for from a trusted friend. Can't tell you how much money we spent on seeds 2 weeks ago. A roma variety will be new to our garden and needed to buy some seeds. Saving them this year and I copied your reply on best choice tomato on the vine to use. Thank you.

This is how we save tomato seed every year. I put bags over the blossoms to keep out pollinators, and you just have to tickle the blossoms with a Q-tip or a toothbrush, and they will pollinate themselves.

Have you had pretty good success in keeping seeds true to the parents even with a large verity of tomatoes that can cross pollinate?

Makes me yearn for a fresh vine ripened tomato.
