With the somewhat overzealous UK laws I just made one using a 30mm cork ball instead of a steel ball. Had to make six passes instead of five because of the larger circumference of the cork ball. Turned out beautifully. Thank you for posting this this jig-less instruction!

Important note for anyone intending to use one of these as a weapon….. Most all state statutes classify a “slung shot” as a prohibited weapon to carry. A monkey’s fist is exactly what is meant by a slung shot… A “shot” in this case originally meant a naval round of “canister” or “grapeshot” meant to be fired from cannon. They were commonly made up and used by sailors… As weapons.

I just learned of this device about 10 minutes ago--this video is very cool. I looked at some knot sights, but you really make it look simple.

I want to thank you so very much. I'm not sure why I have had such a hard time trying to make one of these until now. I even made a jig to try to hold the paranoid, but of course it didn't work. I made this in less than 30 mins all together, measuring and cutting the cord and using a lighter to finish off the ends. The only problem I had was the length, not sure if maybe the ball I was using was slightly bigger than yours but I ended up with a shorter handle? But still very happy with the results. Thank you again so very much for making this simple and easy to follow video.

We used to make these in scouts when camping where there were bears. We'd tie em to our food bundles and chuck em over a tree limb so we could hoist the food up off the ground 15 feet or so...supposed to keep it safe from bears. I guess it worked as our food never got stolen.

First time i saw monkey fist was on ship, a small rope is attached to it and you throw it overboard, a guy catches it and pulls a big rope that is attached to a small one . Its used that way because it would be clumsy to throw big rope especially if it has steel cable in it.

I'm going to do this right now. Looking for a "hobby" to keep my hands busy while talking to my wife (she knits, why can't I weave)
Thanks!

Ive heard they were commonly thrown at a person's face really hard for the initial attack, and the retracted back to be swung or thrown again. Flicked out fast it could catch a person off guard even when out of range of fists or a knife.

that last knot is a hang-man's knot 🤣

Sweet. The Lock Master used to throw a monkey fist down to us so he could retrieve our tow boat deck lines when we’d make a lock on the Mississippi River. Now I’ll know how to make a monkey fist.

I just carry small solid flashlight with paracord loop as edc. Works same and fully legal.

Thanks for this video. Very useful to have one without tools. I followed this to make my first Monkey’s First, a dog toy, using a 9-ball sized rubber ball, and 11 wraps. Took me quite a few goes, and my fingers ached, but finally got there.

If you don't pre-stretch the Paracord, the steel ball will fall out the first time you strike anything.

While this is super interesting, a monkey fist is considered a weapon in many countries. PLEASE GOOGLE YOUR LAWS BEFORE MAKING ONE, FOLKS!

I’m going to make one with a golf ball inside. It’s the perfect keychain size that fits in your pocket.

After 3 tries I can do it without watching the vid now, thank you. Although it is harder ( maybe easier with a jig) I think doing 6 passes makes bearing more secure in there

Yes, thats a hangman's knot.
Its a knot that was basically designed for sharp impacts in mind as the coil of the cord acts like an innate compression spring.
