Sanctions targeting the Russian economy have been West’s most immediate response Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The measures aim to limit Kremlin’s ability to raise money for its war efforts. The EU and its allies have agreed on energy embargoes, froze, financial assets, and implemented restrictions targeting more than 1,400 individuals. These measures come top of sanctions the EU implemented after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. So what has been achieved with the latest sanctions? DW anchor Chris Kober speaks with Nicholas Mulder, Modern European History professor at Cornell University and author of “The Economic Weapon: The Rise of Sanctions as a Tool of Modern War.”

Don’t blame India/Asia for circumventing the sanctions, blame Europe for buying the oil knowing its coming from Russia.

The fact that this question is still being asked 1, 5 years later says a lot...😅

What a redundant debate: Germany is in a recession whereas Russia will grow 1, 5% this year. There's your answer

Is it making life harder? Yes. Is it enough to stop the war? No

The sanctions works quite well! Germany's manufacturing industry has become less competitive because of high energy costs, and has lost its position as the number one export of cars, and the German economy has fallen into a prolonged recession. In the meanwhile, USA earned a lot by taking over the European Market.

Russia is an experienced state that knows how to resist external pressure. Russians even have a saying: "a stick has two ends." And so it turned out: the West thought that it would hold one end of the stick, and beat Russia with the other. But Russia grabbed the second end, and began to beat the West with the first end.

GDP is not a measurement of wealth. It is a measurement of productivity. if I destroy every building in the city, it doesn’t make me wealthier, but new construction will raise my GDP.

It’s working. That’s why Europe is in recession. Prepare another energy high price & shortage 2 months later 😂😂😂

Sanctions work when they are enforced, not when they are declared.

Only thing the sanctions achieved is further empowering China. Take the car industry as an example, yes Russian domestic production dramatically declined, but so did Chinese car exports to Russia increase. Chinese companies received a free entry to a new big market and now China holds significant leverage over Russia

D&W have been trying to answer this question for last two years. They should try to figure out how sanctions are effecting European economy.

Fact: Over 12, 000+ economic sanctions imposed on Russia and all have had little or no effect on their overall economy.

No, the sanctions on Russia are not working. They are however having a big negative impact on the cost of living everywhere else though.

And, in my opinion, the West calls the banal theft and appropriation of Russian assets "sanctions". Meanwhile, Russia continues to debug the economy, look at the English-speaking bloggers who live in Russia and show shops, people's lives..
