If you're DIYing this, remember to keep that sand damp. That sun will heat it up so much and kill your grass. This is especially true if you add fertilizer to it!

Guys, sand can work, but lawns will do better with small particle compost or garden soil. The sand has 0 nutrients and will require a lot more fertilizer. Compost & garden soil with give the roots something to enjoy.

mix sand and soil 50/50 and add grass seeds to the mix.

The amount of effort people go through to effectively sterilize a patch of land will never cease to amaze me...

Rolling your lawn will help a ton too.

I roll my lawn every Spring when the ground is really soft to smooth out many of the bumps. During the summer I will occasionally smooth out uneven spots in the lawn with sifted quality topsoil instead of sand. I simply sprinkle the soil into the low spots and lightly rake it so that the grass comes through.

I'm trying to imagine caring enough about the levelness of my backyard grass to spend so much time and effort leveling it. I can't imagine it.

In England we use big heavy rollers to get lawns flat, you can pull them by yourself, add the sand aswell and you’ll soon have a lawn so flat you can play croquet on it, if that’s your thing……

Here in Australia if you forget to water the grass during summer, the soil turns into sand 😂

You are my hero for doing this. Renter now, but wish I had seen this before...I was basically obsessed with my lawn as an owner.

im not a pro but thought i would write here. I had a problem with moss taking over my lawn. I dug it up, and planted micro clover its taken off this year and im looking forward to june where i can really see if my lawn stays that green color or turns yellow and goes into hibernation again. Just thought i would share. I would love to have that nice lawn in june. Really shame my neighbors!

I used screened red sand. We use it produce it in one of our quarries at work. We use it to mix with screened top soil. But top soil is expensive, and red sand is one of the cheaper and better sands, in my opinion, for growing grass. You can put grass seed on it, and it will grow.

This spring, I had a bunch of flat rock in my yard that finally worked its way loose over the winter. So I dug them all up and filled all the holes with sand. Looks like crap for a bit, but it's cheaper than the alternative

Get some topsoil delivered, with large grain perlite mixed in it at about a 20+ to 1 soil to perlite ratio, and some grass seed.
Aerate the lawn
Cover the yard in a thin mix of soil and perlite, rake flat and water in.
Repeat every 4 or so days until level then add seeds when do the final dressings.

Sand, that thick, is going to compact and give you patches next summer that appear to be too dry, but are actually suffering from overwatering because the rest of the lawn drains properly and they dont. Especially if you are using soft building sand, the only sand i would apply to lawns is white silica sand very finely with topsoil. Plus building sand has a salt content, you dont want to salt your lawn

I would throw dirt on top the sand and keep it moist for a couple weeks, or get lucky with a couple rainy days the loose soil will fill the low spots. Then repeat until the soils level

My neighbor did this years ago to his yard with sand, and it turned out beautiful, for him. It turned our backyard into a swamp. There was nothing we can do about it because people have the right to do whatever the hell they want. It rotted out the fence between us and we never replaced it. It caused problems between us and it was never worth fighting over so my family just lived with it.
