How to Water a Bonsai tree

The most important part of taking care of your Bonsai trees is watering. How often a tree needs to be watered depends on several factors such as; species of the tree, size of the tree, size of the pot, time of year, soil-mixture, and climate.

As mentioned previously, how often a Bonsai needs to be watered depends on many factors, and providing an exact guide is not possible. Instead, you need to observe your trees individually.

I have my bonsai gardenia indoors. I use distilled water and I water everyday. When the water runs into the drip tray I pour it back into my watering can and I water the tree again. I leave a little water in the drip tray at all times. I then mist the leaves with a spray bottle filled with distilled water. I have been doing this everyday for 3 months and my bonsai is very happy. I am a beginner recently got a Chinese sweet plum bonsai tree. I am keeping this tree in doors, it is currently near a south facing window. It does not get harsh direct sun light but it does get light. I am worried i am doing something wrong. The tree came with many leaves and branches. I let it get used to my home for a week or two and then i began trimming it and shaping it how I wanted. Since doing so I have noticed leaves are drying, some are getting brown spots, and falling off. I purchased a humidity reader as I thought maybe I was not watering it enough. It seems that may have been the case. I am now watering it around every 2 or so days. So far the over all look of the tree has not improved I am worried it is to late :(.

I was gifted a juniper bonsai and it was doing well until I set it outside for too long. Also I started watering in the kitchen sink. However the bonsai began growing mold on the pot and around the tree. I assumed it was due to an unclean sink while watering.

If you buy a bonsai from a bonsai from a local nursery and they tell you the bonsai doesn’t need to be transplanted but you want to still do it because the soil they used is not optimal. Can you do it?
