Thanks for the comments and good point about the roots. We have thousands of trees of all different ages. We let some of our trees mature in grower's pots prior to working on them. For this video, We used a little tree to help illustrate some basic techniques for newcomers to bonsai. Thanks for watching!

Hi Katherine. Good bonsai soil will always have good drainage. It's unlikely that you will drown your bonsai tree if the soil is good. Most beginners will usually kill their tree by underwatering rather than overwatering. As for letting it drain, typically we let our trees drain under filtered sunlight where they spend most of their time. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.

This was very informative, thank you! I wasn’t sure how to tell if the soil was soaked because I thought that maybe the moisture was below the surface, but now I can tell without just looking that the soil needs watering.
