It’s weird but this point of the series Light seems less psychotic and emotionless. You really see gradually throughout the series how his humanity is stripped by the Death Note and his twisted agenda. Also when he disowns the Death Note whilst in a cell you can see the Light come back in to his eyes when he forgets the Death Note. Crazy.

Honestly, this is a very good hiding spot, and Light put a lot of effort into it, BUT the fact that he'll leave the key in the lock might look more suspicious to people. If he hid the key too, then a person (like a cop) will be looking for the key, and if they find it, they'll open it, and see the diary, and that would probably satisfy their curiosity, but by leaving the key in, they might think "okay, obviously there's something more to this."

He should keep everything else in the plan, but he should ALSO hide the key.
