Tips and information for recovering from Hernia Surgery if you live alone.

These are things you should do before you leave the house to go for surgery.

Cook and prepare a week’s worth of meals and snacks before surgery. Meals that will be easy to pass through your digestive system. Things like vegetable soup with beans, carrots, celery…, oatmeal with prunes, egg salad, chicken salad, steamed carrots and broccoli, asparagus… low fat and low grease type foods. Snacks like apples, oranges, *ripe* bananas, all kinds of fruits are good to keep things moving.

Start taking a stool softener one or two days before surgery and then continue taking it when you get home.

Place something next to your toilet you can grab onto to help you get on and off the toilet. Do the same for your bed and other areas you may sit.

Have toothpaste, toothbrush, and floss out and ready to use. A glass of water to rinse your mouth out. You’re not going to be able to bend over to _cup water_ in your hands.

If you don’t already have a _grabber, _ get one.

Do not take your phone to surgery. Leave your phone at home on your nightstand and fully charged.

Have on hand at least two ice packs that you can wrap a clean cloth around to put over the location of surgery and rotate them from the freezer as needed. This will keep the swelling down.

Read your after surgery instructions and follow them. Listen to your doctor and follow his/her orders. Keep the wound area clean and clean it with an antibacterial soap every morning and again before you go to bed at night.

The next day get up and walk but be careful. I walked outside around the cul-de-sac four times a day starting the day right after surgery. Twice in the morning, once in the afternoon, and then again in the evening.

Have clean sheets on your bed.

Wear loose fitting clothes.

Have plenty of water and Gatorade on hand and before you leave for surgery place a few bottles on your nightstand, computer desk, kitchen table, kitchen counters, your television chair, and in your refrigerator. Drink plenty of liquids. At least four bottles per day.

Take pain medication as needed but don’t over do it. All pain medications can cause constipation.

A thermometer on your nightstand.

A list of movies you may want to watch.

I can’t sugarcoat this for you. The first three days are going to be tough so be ready. It gets easier on your fourth day.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

I am 91 years old and very well and active for my age but I have an inguinal hernia now which developed over 18 months ago, at the beginning I used to push it in myself though on some occasions pushing it in took a long time and was frightening, friends would say “call the ambulance “ but at that time I didn’t. On the 5th May, the night before the Coronation, I did, at the Emergency it was dealt with quite quickly, following that and within 5 weeks I’ve had the hernia out all together and am a nervous wreck as I had to wait for help for a long time . Unfortunately not those who had attended me knew how to deal with a hernia and that caused me much distress. Now I am going to be seen by the Surgeon and hear what his opinion is, I am wearing a Truss but question is, that at 91 should I have the keyhole surgery or carry on with the Truss ? I thank this Doctor for explaining everything so well and things are clearer in my mind to confront the Surgeon.

One treatment for a hiatal hernia is getting a neck adjustment. C3, C4, C5, keeps the diaphragm alive! The phrenic never controls the diaphragm and runs down C3, C4, and C5. An unadjusted neck can put pressure on the phrenic nerve causing the diaphragm to open and allow the stomach to slide up. Most likely the neck is subluxated and an adjustment and manual pulling down of the stomach will help. I know this works from personal experience. Not all chiropractors will know this for some reason.

I had a roommate many years ago who was about 5'9" and weighed maybe 130 LBS. One of his hobbies was rebuilding cars. One day, he and a friend were using an iron rod with a chain to move an engine block when he stumbled causing the weight to shift suddenly putting strain on his abdomen and part of his intestines displaced into his scrotum which swelled to the size of a large orange. He had to wait 2 days for the swelling to go down before he had corrective surgery so he sat on the couch in our room with a large bag of ice between his legs on pain killers the entire time. To this day, I don't think he will lift much for fear of it happening again...

I had a hernia on the left side. First went to my primary care and he referred me to a doctor that specializes in hernia operations. He informed me I had a lateral hernia. I went in for a laparoscopic surgery using mesh to patch it up. It was a quick in and out kind of thing. Little bit of pain after but not much at all. This was some years ago now and I can do everything I was able to do before. I would recommend the surgery for sure. Having my tonsils removed some years before that was far more painful. And I do mean 'far more painful'.

I have double inguinal hernias caused by gardening and DIY over the years but as a woman it's one of those things taken less seriously than in men. Before I found the second one, during the pandemic, I was in such an incredible amount of pain one day that I went to hospital but I was diagnosed as having a water infection - which I knew it wasn't. When I disputed this, the doctor said, "then I don't know what it is!" I found out some time later it was a strangulated hernia! I can manage it but they do get uncomfortable at times.

I had a hiatal hernia repair, quite severe, a couple years back, much better now. Also had an inguinal hernia repair at age 5 or 6, told I could have been born with it.

I thought I had a jammer 25 years ago which wasn't hut a hiatus hernia. 8 years ago it acted up and went to a hospital after 2 days severe pain. They tried to tell me I had a heart attack, but I knew better. Because our family has history of heart disease, I stayed in hospital forb3 days and went 70 miles away for an angiogram. I was right, no heart attack, no blockage. At the time i was hanging drywall 5 days a week for 15 + years

I suspect I have a hernia even though o haven’t been diagnosed. When I went to my PD, I was sent to a physical therapist after my examination. It’s been three sessions where they have me doing yoga exercises and I’m still not feeling better. The interesting part is that I can run and do my daily activities just fine, although I feel a constant discomfort and slight pain in my abdominal area and need to lay down and rest.
