A look back in time at the history and development of the Godot Game Engine, first developed in house at Okam Studios, then released Open source in 2014 all the way up to Godot 3.2, 4.0 and beyond. We look at every major release from the very beginning until today, as well as the future of Godot 4.

We chose Godot because it seemed like the best game engine to base a community project on. The only other game engine we ever considered was Unreal, but it lost out because Godot seems much easier to learn, and much better for people on a budget. One of our devs had trouble even getting Unreal to run on his laptop, which isn't a bad laptop. For young people thinking about learning game dev, and most people in most of the world (for instance in Argentina), Godot is much more accessible simply because you don't need a good computer or a good internet connection.

My impression is also that Godot's modular file structure will make it easier for people to do modding, and more interesting modding, in our virtual environment once it's ready.

As far as I know, they are making a new TPS-Demo which is supposed to showcase what Godot 4.0 would be capable of. On the twitter of the main developers, they show some pictures from time to time with some of the assets.

Finally started learning Godot (3.1) last year, and it's great.

I started learning Game Development on Godot, left to use Unity after a while since it has more features that i don't constantly need to be creating from scratch to use. but goddamn 2 weeks in i'm back on Godot. Unity is not intuitive at all, i rather put up having to create everything from scratch than deal Unity's components and bewildering hierarchy, whats the point in naming an object if looking it up by it's transform is the recommended way to access it?

2.1 was for me the biggest update that got me hooked to this amazing engine.
I just got into game development and I had started looking into Unity. But since they didn't have a stable official release for Linux, I started looking into other alternatives. And that's how I met Godot.

I started my drag racing game on Godot 2.1.3 about a year ago. Didn't have internet so kept at it, now I have 3.1 and have noticed a few interesting little bits and pieces, one of which is :GetActionStrength() (I think I typed it correctly) which would be handy for my as I added controller support, so you could do partial throttle and what-not. The plan is to mess around a bit more in 2.1.3 and then re-start from scratch in 3.1 (or even later versions, since they now exist) and potentially make it into a single-player campaign-driven game. Can't wait to see what else Godot comes up with.

I met Godot in Version 2.1.X.
I'm vary to say 3.0 was the biggest release for me though, because while 3.0 brought a ton of new cool stuff, specially stuff that jumps into your eye, like the new theme, or the shiny new PBR renderer, it felt quite ... bare bones.
So, I think 3.1, in my, eyes, was a much better release than 3.0.
3.1 basically is what 3.0 should have been. Barely touched 3.0, but I enjoyed the heck out of 3.1.

I first heard about Godot when Okam studios made a blog post that the engine would be released as an open-source project. At that time, I was trying to do a 2D game so Godot was perfect. After playing with the engine for a while, it was announced that the 3D engine would get a major overhal in 3.0. So at that point, I decided to put my 2D project on hold, and started working on plans for a 3D project with the hope that the engine would have everything I need. Since then, I've gone between 2D and 3D based on the stability and features of Godot, but I still plan on making Godot my main game engine for all project moving forward.

I first heard it about on twitter, when people were retweeting the 2.1 release. At the time I didn't like it. However, 3.0 came along and it respark my interest in it, primary to the C# support. Now I am using it to make my game.

Its a really good engine.

I first learned about it around the time of 2.1 (around November 2016, to be exact?), and I think 3.0 was the really big release for me.
It's been great seeing it progress and grow since then.

Joined just a hair before 3.0 was released. No regrets what so ever, I've tried every engine under the sun I could get my hands on, but for me personally, Godot just *gels*. Took me a bit to get into, same as any engine to really learn the basic ins and outs, but been cranking stuff out ever since!

I discovered Godot about 6 weeks ago (version 3.2.1) and have been porting one of my old games to it from Macromedia Director MX. It's super nice not to have to write collision detection routines or a map editor and to finally be making a full-screen game.

I just added Godot to my list of game engines in 2019. I'm not sure if i started with 3.0 or 3.1, but it took me so long to adapt because I am a true believer in the Unity and Torque engines, with Torque being my all time favorite, because of its built-in network support, and its setup for Fps stlye games. I know that similiar functionality can be done in other engines, but Torque has it all set up for you out of the box.

Great overview not enough software makes a timeline part of their documentation as that's also serves as marketing the confidence in the products progress.
