The other cause is getting crappy made-in-China power steering pump. I put in a new after-market pump, made in China (like everything else nowadays), and it whines (not too loud) for 10 secs when starting the car after 6 or more hours of parking. It also whines when steering all the way to the left or right and only while hold the steering wheel to the respective extreme direction. I have replaced the outlet o-ring (the high pressure side of the pump), but it does not help, as it looks like it struggles to build pressure. Luckily I still have my old/original/OEM pump. So, I am to rebuild it with new o-rings and gaskets.

I'm convinced that the scrapping noise when I turn my car is the power steering pump. I had taken it to a auto-shop that I THOUGHT was a reputable source. Only to find out that they screwed me out of my alternator by putting on a defective alternator. So I took it to a locally owned shop, not owned by a chain and they installed a alternator that actually works. Imagine that right?

I'm starting to think they screwed me out of my power steering pump as well. Whenever I turn the wheel all the way it makes a very feint 'whine' noise and while driving and I turn the wheel it makes a scrapping noise. I almost had a heart-attack because I thought it could be a CV joint or something like that. At that point I was about to sell the car.

I have an issue where my car makes a quiet sound when turning left or right that resembles someone using a lathe. The sound only happens at highway speeds and the second I get below 30Mph it’s gone.
