There’s a line in the movie that Kirstin says about how every photo she took was a warning she sent home; “don’t do this.” The movie is intentionally light on details because it’s a warning. The details don’t matter. Don’t do this.

As someone who has family who have just fled a civil war, this movie (that I saw ln) very much echoed their experiences - war always devolves into carnage and horror. This movie very much serves as a warning. Whatever the motivations for conflict, conflict always leads to the same place.

It’s about the mechanics of a modern civil war. It’s about what would happen, not why it happened.

The exact reason Alex Garland paired Texas and California was purely not to pick sides. Imagine if he’d made the movie pro-Democrat and made Texas the bad guys. It would not only be biased but would cause further division in the real United States.

Americans acting like they don’t make movies about other countries with little or no research but hey it’s only an issue when it comes to America

Hollywood does it all the time when they decide to tell stories from other countries, so….

Guess I as a Swed should be this upset about the Midsommar movie that was directed and written by an Ameican. The guy depicted one of our most precious holidays in Sweden as an Horror fiction 😅 (This is a joke obviously)

Grace, you are my favorite movie reviewer but i disagree with you 95% of the time. So... Im still looking foward for this movie.

With the state of modern journalism most corporate journalists wouldn't recognize themselves on screen.

In case it doesn’t get mentioned here Texas and California were Garlands choice exactly because ideologically they don’t add up. He mentioned before not wanting to give clear answers for what its worth. I think he intends to confound and confuse. To disarm us if that makes sense. BUT both states have a history of people clamoring to succeed and both wield huge economic and political power and even one of those states succeding would cripple the rest of the nation. If they joined forces they could do incredible damage to the rest of the country.

You know this is fiction? Not a documentary…

How can a fictional movie be poorly researched.

11:10 TBH this is probably how other countries feel when Americans make movies about them soooo

I get what Grace is saying but I think what the film tries to focus on is the dehumanization of people during war, the picture during the credits fully captured this. I think it did that pretty well tbh

He doesn't take a side, and that seems to bother people. It's just a cautionary tale, Geez 🙄

I was there last night and I thought that this movie was portraying an alternate version of America, and the horrors of what a civil war in modern America would look like. While it is obviously inspired by current events, it is not a 1:1.

Japan has always understood American nationalism better than almost anyone. See Senator Armstrong in Metal Gear: Revengence. Kojima wrote that character years before Trump entered the political theater.

Journalism is failing badly. It’s becoming an echo chamber.

It’s weird to say, how do you, a non-American make a movie about a fictitious setting in the US. Haven’t American directors done exactly that with other countries! Very weird take …

Grace, Alex made a creative choice to pair Texas and California (two opposing sides politically IRL) in order to not show bias. This movie is meant to be fiction and not taken literally. I believe Garland did an excellent job centering the film around photographers who simply wanted to record history and not create an opinion. This film is not based on this universe’s USA, but shows how gruesome and violent a modern day civil war would look like. Something that is crucial to avoid.
