Dynamic EQ - Essential Production and Mixing Tips

In this video, I explain what Dynamic EQ is and demonstrate some great ways to use it in a mix. It's an excellent tool to help level out your tracks and make your mix sound more professional and smooth. I show how to use dynamic EQ to level out an acoustic guitar performance to make it fit in the mix better and discuss many other great places to use the technique.

Dynamic EQ is not the same as multiband compression and I hope by the end of the video you understand the key differences. It can be used to remove resonant peaks in your audio and remove offending frequencies. You can gain a lot more precision than with multiband compression and have a lot more control of the band/filter types used.

OMG, I would either use automation throughout a track and move EQ faders by hand, or just use that three band compressor.

I do it with native plugins: peak controller and EQ2. The pc in the mixer channel of the sound that will trigger the signal and the EQ2 on the other sound. Then link the volume of the band to the peak, adjust "base" and "volume" on Peak controller and done! Works reallly well.

Yeah, the Nova plugin is my favorite plugin probably. Unfortunately, my poor old PC struggles under the load of several instances of it running at the same time. But is really is a godsend.

I had to revisit this video after the dynamic compression one. This serves as my reminder to activate TDR Nova free on my new Mac Mini M2. I had it on the Windows PC I was using to mix, and Nova is not only a nice EQ, it's also a very nice dynamic EQ.
