Wisdom. Joe knows. Simple, it's the music, not the tools; the artist, not the paintbrush. TYVM Joe.

I use dynamic EQ, but not for that reason. I find that, when set well, it adds life and "bounce" to a track, or even the whole mix. It's really just a step up from multi-band compression and I love it.
Be good to see it in S1. ☺️

Great job Joe! We are learned about dynamic and time based effects last month in class!

Thanks Joe. Focus on the water not the bucket as the saying goes! If you were really worried about it, you could always bring the notch filter in/out with automation when it's needed.

Thank you very much. You really 'specifically' helped me out. I don't own S1 version 6, and so consequently I don't have the new Dynamic EQv3. Listening to what you just said helped me to be confident That I can isolate that one specific sample note that is too high/shrill on a melodic clarinet line using EQv2, and not worry about the impact that eq adjustment may have on all the other notes being played. Fantastic, I can't thank you enough 🙂

I’ll use a dynamic eq for a heavy, palm muted guitar to control the low mids, or after a reverb and side chained to the lead vocal to duck the upper mids to add some more clarity.

Man, you are an absolute diamond with those good advices!
Those advise of coping with problem is applicable to any situation in life! What a life lesson!

Your videos go hand to hand with Glenn from SMG. But you are speaking, not shouting 😅

Cheers from Russia!

Fantastic advice, seriously. If it sounds good, it sounds good.

Remember people, setting your volume levels is like... 85% of a great mix, seriously!

I think you are onto something! I have seen some bizarre examples. Thank You

I'm going to have to be honest and say that I eventually moved from pro-eq (Studio One stock plugin) to Pro-Q3 (fabfilter equivalent) for 3 reasons: 1) more eq points, 2) band soloing and 3) dynamic eq. All were things I felt were missing in pro-eq but it was actually the dynamic eq that tipped me over the edge and had me getting out my wallet. You don't need dynamic eq to make great sounding music but it's helpful in a whole number of situations. Sometimes it just sounds a bit better than the static equivalent but often it's just because the workflow is loads easier and the results more consisten than the alternative ways of achieving the same thing through automation or whatever.

That's my take on dynamic eq and I have a funny feeling if Presonus introduced dynamic eq it would get a lot of use.

Why presonus is not bringing soloing option for EQbands this is so much needed

Great perspective...and do I spy a Kajabi milestone gift in the corner? Congrats!

I love my F6 dynamic EQ. If there's an annoying resonance or frequency I can notch it out but when the instrument isn't creating that nasty resonance then I feel like I've EQ'd a perfectly good sound for nothing. The dynamic EQ can help keep life and presence into your overall track (or vocalist) and only get used when it needs to be. Much easier than automating.
That's my take on it.

"We have a rich history of making music without them", doesnt that apply to 80% of the functions of a modern DAW? 😉

It looks like the truth in front of you has indeed set you free.

I like the general message but it’s important to remember that we’ve had multiband frequency processing since the 60’s. Not to mention the natural multiband compressed and saturated nature of tape that made sibilance a lot easier to control. Sure, in this particular situation, a notch is one of the better ways to address this issue - not the BEST way just because it’s the simplest. Dynamic EQ/multiband compression/de-essers aren’t shiny new toys that have only become popular in the last 3 years, and frankly I wish more people would talk about how useful they are.

Your theory about theoretical overthinking is good theory. Even more wonderful is to hear an artist/producer of the current era recognize all of the marvelous records and songs that led us here, recorded and produced with far fewer tech options. A great song performed exceptionally will stand the test of time. So then, IS less more?

I agree and disagree at the same time. I love Joe's minimalistic approach to music. Solve the problem with the simplest tools to let the creative process going instead of thinking longer about the problem.

The thing that I disagree here is that, for some of us, we have to work with more complex materials where a dynamic EQ can work better. It really depends on the material. There is a time I encountered a female singing vocal that have nasty honkiness only on specific words, it's her style but the honkiness resonates. That's a time where a dynamic EQ will be better than normal EQ. It's easier to use than a multiband compressor and it's faster too. It can also be used for bass where there are only specific notes causing muddiness but then if you use a normal EQ, the low-end energy becomes lost.

Also, I use it for sections like where I need lots of energy from the band but it masks the vocals, I will use an external sidechain function to the dynamic EQ to duck some frequencies from the instruments, especially the mids of the mid channel, to give more space to the vocals only when singing. This means that it can be used for other purposes as well as creative ones i.e. band specific expansion.
