You MUST Sow These Seeds In March | Gardening For Beginners

Spring is finally here, and the garden is ready to burst back into life again. There are lots of seeds we can sow in March. It's an exciting and busy time for gardeners - we are hitting the ground running, and it's 'all systems go!'

I'm down at the allotment garden going over what vegetable and flower seeds you can sow in March, and I'll also give you some info about growing each crop as well.

Some of the seeds in my list will still be sown at home or in a heated greenhouse, where they will remain until after your last frost date. For me, that's around mid-May, as I live in plant hardiness zone 8b, in the North West of England.
Some of the other seeds can be sown in an unheated greenhouse or direct outside in March, as they are more cold tolerant.

What crops are you sowing in March?

Wow, I would say you are very young to have lost your father now, never mind 10 years ago. I'm sorry to hear that, though he clearly did a great job producing such a fine gentleman of a son. A good tip for slugs is a thin strip of copper placed around the plants you want to protect, separated by a couple of mm gap before a strip of another metal such as zinc. you don't need large thicknesses or pieces, even wire would suffice (you could put them on double sided sticky tape if around pots etc, or just lay wire across the drainage holes in the bottom if that is their source of entry). If a slug tries to cross over them, its moist body will connect between the metals, creating a flow of electrons between the metals acting like a battery and it will get a shock and retreat. Thank you for mentioning flowers as I don't have room for veg growing in my garden.

Lets hope the slugs and snails give us a rest this year and you have a beautiful garden full of colourful flowers.

I'm in WI, USA (zone 6a). Our last frost date is around April 28th and I've got just about everything you mentioned started from seed in my basement since Jan. I'm starting my Marigolds and tomatoes today and probably more peppers because I didn't get enough to germinate. We had a lousy summer for growing last year as well. Tons of rain, but my cukes, artichokes and peppers were a total fail. I like the transplanting tip for leeks. I'll do that:) First time seeing your channel, and I'm definitely wanting to check out your other videos. Cheers to a good harvest this year! Organic produce prices are ridiculous here. Everything is these days and getting scarier by the second with our inept, ridiculous "leadership. I'm so glad I know how to grow my own food.

Many thanks for all those tips as I am fairly new to grow veggies from seed. To keep the slugs off my sunflowers, I put ash (from the barbecue for example) around them. I hope you will have many sunflowers this year, your Father would be very proud of you.

Hi Jim, I plant my Sunflowers as good sized seedlings and use a thick layer of bark around the bottom. Never get slug problems after that. Slugs are more likely to get them in my greenhouse 😂. Great vlog 😊

It's an exciting month, I've just started sowing the tomatoes, aubergines and peppers. Already have the marigolds popping up

Great video. I grow lots of sunflowers in large pots, which I place in large drip trays. Always have water in the trays as slugs cannot swim, although I found only 2 that did try! B & Q sell what they call "gravel trays" that are around 50cmx40cm at10cm deep. (No need to mess with copper).

I’m also doing a bunch of different sunflowers the teddy bear being one of them I’m planning on using top half of 2 litre bottles to keep em little bit warmer and hopefully keep slugs off 😊

Last year we had a killing frost in the middle of june. I only got a couple hundred pounds of tomatoes. I lost about 1/2 my crop in that freeze
