You MUST Sow These Seeds In April | Gardening For Beginners

April is another busy month in the vegetable plot.
The garden is waking up from the long, cold winter.
There are many jobs to get done, and lots of seeds to sow and vegetables and flowers to plant.

Just like last month, April can still bring cold and unfavorable weather in the form of wind, rain, frost, and even snow!
The weather on the whole is generally improving, though. With the days lengthening and sun increasing in strength. April can be a month of two extremes: warm days and cold nights.

So we still need to be cautious when sowing and planting in April. Tender crops still need to be sown at home or in a greenhouse.

What seeds can you sow in April? in today's video I'll quickly touch on the crops which we can sow in April which we may have already sown in January, February, and March.

We'll then go into detail with a few crops that are new to April which we couldn't really get away with sowing earlier and haven't mentioned in previous videos.
I've got a few interesting varieties of vegetables to share with you as well!

Sweetcorn in poly tunnel is a great idea, I did that last year and had great results. I covered the cobs with fruit protection bags and had no problems. They do however grow really tall, mine were a good 8 feet tall. I grew sunflowers in the tunnel as well, and again had great results.
Best of luck with them all Jim.

Super slugs! I saw one with a cape and a pair of knickers over his tights the other day, darn things. We need a slug kryptonite.😂

I find starting off twice as much as you need in feb and march and then in April move out half of it to the garden works well. If you get nice warm weather then they take and thrive, and if you get some cold weather and they don’t do well, you can just replace them at the end me of April / start of may as you would normally.

Whatever the weather! That's me as well.😊 We love our tomatoes, so this year I'll be trying some different ones, like the purple ones; I think they are the Black Russian; not sure, as I got them from a fellow gardener. As I mentioned previously, I'm having trouble planning with the new plot and have less time due to work. It's going to be very challenging as the soil is in the worst possible condition—full of weed roots (half a meter long🤦‍♀), uneven, well, you name it. It's also very sandy, so a lot of top soil, manure, and compost will be needed to make it as productive as it needs to be. My previous garden is much better now as we're starting the third season, but it took a lot of work and investment. Well we'll see. The expectations are high, and I'm very excited. 😊⁣ Good luck, Jim. (I'm happy we don't have those many slugs this year.🙏)

Loved your tell about the slugs 😂so funny, let’s hope the RHS are right about there’s not going to be many around this year, umm 😊we will see. We don’t get to many in our garden because we have a wildlife pond and get a lot off frogs.maybe you should get a pond.😊thanks Jim.

I love courgettes we are a family of four I dehydrate a lot of the glut and process it into courgettes flour and substitute some of the wheat flour with courgette flour. I also grate and freeze together with some blanched grated carrot so I can add to soups and stews, burger fillers when prepared with relish etc. It’s a massive staple for us

A really good tip for getting 100% pollination is to try the following:-

Get a brown paper bag and put the tassel of the corn inside the bag, and shake vigourously. Repeat for each tassell. This collects the pollen

Next, get a small paintprush (a childs one will do) and dampen the bristles with water.

Then dip the moistend bristles into the bag of pollen, and brush all over the silks.

A little tedious but it does get get great results.

Lovely video Jim, I enjoyed hearing your plans. Off out now to pot on chillis. Tmrw I'll hopefully get my squash and melon seeds down. Trying spaghetti squash first time this year, fingers crossed! Had a strange outcome with my nasturtium seeds, out of 9 only 1 came up!

Great to see you in your t-shirt enjoying some warmer temperatures. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your raised beds help deter the slugs this year for you. Also if you can get hold of sugar cane mulch, or that cocoa shell mulch or similar product with a strong smell, using that will confuse your aviator slugs & they won't know which direction to fly 😎

I grew the bolder beetroot last year and if you pick some small they are like sweeties. And don’t dye your hands red! This year I’m growing Greek gigantis beans and achocha “fat baby” which is exciting.

Here's a tip for getting rid of slugs - My parents had an amazing garden years ago and they would pour beer in a jar cap (like a mayo jar top) and place in a few spots in the garden. This attracted slugs away from the plants as they would crawl into the beer in the jar top. I haven't used this yet in my garden, but it worked for them!
