Exos aerospace performed another test launch yesterday, demonstrating their SARGE rocket - Suborbital Autonomous Rocket with GuidancE. But SARGE is a continuation of Stig which was developed by John Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace, hoping to provide a reusable sounding rocket platform for zero G experiments.

5:28 "Relighting the parachute" ... what a landing that'd be! Flaming parachutes of glory! lol

In case any of you missed it, John Carmack was on The Joe Rogan podcast recently. He didn't spend a lot of time talking about his rocket company but he did go into that and his hobby of turbocharging cars for a decent amount of time. This guy was my hero in the late '90s and early 2000s and I'm forever grateful for the countless hours the entertainment.

I got to be a "theodolite operator" for the first launch of the sarge. I did view the on board camera with a VR headset and I have to say the rotation made me violently ill. I'm hoping to process the footage using optical flow techniques to remove the rotation to reduce motion sickness.

And they're based in my hometown! I went down the road a few years ago to see if they offered tours or something and they ended up showing us around right then. It's a small little shop and you'd think they were manufacturing plumbing or something in there if it weren't for the rocket on the floor or the rcs blocks on the tables. Even got lucky enough to see a static fire from mission control. Really cool guys, glad to see them getting some attention

I miss Armadillo Aerospace. I got to see those guys fly at the X-Prize Cup in 2007. Really cool guys.

"... landing using drogue chute and then re-lighting the parachute". Oh boy... I'm "correcting" Scott Manley :D

I remember reading the Armadillo Aerospace updates each Thursday, it was one of the highlights of my week. Glad that they're still around in some form

I'm imagining a parallel with all the varieties of early motor vehicle designs which proliferated when motoring without rails became a thing. I am enjoying the current state of rocketry, it's so free and imaginative and brave.

Let’s not forget AMROC ( American Rocket Company ) lead by George Koopman, in the late 1980’s. A very interesting story. Providing low cost payload insertion to LEO, using solid propellants ( polybutylene and carbon, with pressurized O2 ).

I am STILL P.O.'d that rocket racing thing never took off {NO pun intended}.

Could you talk about the unmanned *X-37B* orbiter ?
An unmanned X-37B space plane landed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday, wrapping up a record 780 days in orbit, the US Air Force said Sunday. The mission breaks the mysterious plane's own record by spending more than two years in space.

I'm glad to see something happen from Armadillo. I attended several meetings and test firings of their rockets before John shut it down.

Power off in NorCal gives us a chance to rediscover books like 'Failure Is Not An Option'. Oh the irony!
Thanks for another great video!

Joe Rogan interviewed Jon Carmack recently! It was a great Podcast! They touched on Armadillo Areospace a little pit

5:30 I generally try to avoid lighting the parachute - though it sounds very kerbal.

One of those exos guys moonlights as a high school AP chemistry teacher! He inspired a myself and many others to pursue careers in science and rocketry.
